Reviews
Pros:
Location. It’s pretty close to the rest of the Capitol Hill destinations and only about a ten minute walk from Cal Anderson. It’s close to the ten and eight buses and the light rail.
Food. The bar shares a kitchen with Annapurna downstairs. The head chef very obviously loves what they do and cares very deeply about their craft. I don’t think I’ve ever had anything that was actually bad, only food items that didn’t fit my tastes. The tandori chicken and tensing momo are go-tos. The bar has a partial menu compared to the restaurant.
The drinks. I’m partial to the frozen drinks they make, especially Anna’s Banana. I order it almost every time I go. I don’t care how girly it is; it’s delicious. My less picky friends have ordered the cocktails on the menu and I have never heard a bad thing about a single one of them. Whoever planned this menu cares very much and knows what they’re doing.
Cons:
This is a big one: the service. It alone cost the bar three stars in my review. I never go when the bar has more than a handful of people because it seems like I’m always waiting forever. I’ve been to restaurants with good food and bad service and have gone back; I’ve been to places with great service but mediocre food and have gone back. I try really hard not to judge a place too harshly on one criteria, especially since there’s so much that goes into having a successful eatery, but after a certain point, you really can ignore it anymore. The service in the downstairs isn’t stellar either, but you can tell they’re trying, which I can’t say for the Yeti bar. Now, this is where it gets weird…
Another reviewer and a fellow local guide called out a bartender that I also had issues with during my last visit, described as “pale white with a shaved head.” I also had the exact same experience, “He never acknowledged us. FOR 15 minutes!! He waited on every other white person that walked into the bar after us. Without even a hello.” I also sat at the bar and made eye contact with this guy several times, had my ID and debit card out and a menu in front of me, but after 20 minutes just packed up and left after being skipped over twice after random people walked in well after I did. This is the really frustrating part of the other person’s review: the other reviewer insists that their bad service by this bartender was because they were half of an interracial couple. I think that an accusation of racism is a very extreme one and should not be made lightly, however it would be dishonest of me to not mention that I’m also half of an interracial relationship and have been to this bar with my black girlfriend several times. In any case, whatever this guy’s problem was, this is probably some of the worst service I’ve ever gotten. I can’t recommend this bar in all good faith, especially when the restaurant downstairs serves the great food which is the real appeal of this place, and you can order drinks at the restaurant as well. Why visit the bar at all, then? I seriously doubt I’ll be back.
