Inspired by Hobart’s iconic Mt Wellington, the name YAMASHITA translates from Japanese meaning below the mountain. We strive to express Hobart in our restaurant, incorporating the Tasman Bridge in our logo and in our food by combining local produce with Japanese cooking methods to delight our plates.

Reviews
There was only one lobster left, so we ordered the lobster three ways, which was a great choice. The lobster sashimi was extremely fresh and tender, and the salmon was rich and beautifully flavoured.
I came with a friend and there were two of us. Since my friend doesn’t eat raw food, we added an unagi set a bit later. The staff were very considerate and helped speed up the order to match our dining pace, so my friend didn’t have to wait. Even though it’s a more common dish, my friend said it was cooked really well and tasted great.
We both had a wonderful time and left very happy. On the way out, we also picked up a house-made fridge magnet – $15 and absolutely worth it, cute and well made.
Highly recommend for both the food and the service!
One highlight was when they presented us with a live lobster to confirm its freshness—what a nice touch! Every dish we ordered was delicious, truly exceeding our expectations.
To top it off, they surprised my two daughters with lovely souvenirs when we received the bill. We can’t wait to return!
We ordered the Sashimi Don and the Tasmanian M4+ steak. The sashimi was incredibly fresh and clean-tasting, and the steak was perfectly cooked and full of flavour. Every dish was absolutely amazing. I would definitely come back again — this is a spot in Hobart you shouldn’t miss.
The sukiyaki was wonderful too, perfectly balanced between sweet and savory—I ended up drinking several bowls of the broth. I also really loved the beef tartare. And this was the first place where I tried black sesame ice cream; the flavor is unique and grows on you with every bite. Matcha ice cream is my personal favourite though, and I still prefer that one.
A truly lovely spot—highly recommend!
Customer services are average, while the place’s ambience is good for a cozy and quiet dining experience. Prices on the menu are reasonable considering dishes’ quality and good, central location of the restaurant. You can pay with all type of credit cards with additional payment surcharge of up to 1.5%. They also charged additional Public Holiday surcharge of 10%.
