We started as a family business that first opened our door in 2003. Calling ourselves as just Yama at the time, we only had four tables, truly being just a hole in the wall. Through an arduous process of many trials and errors, Andy Chen was able to perfect the now YamaChen menu to that we know today. Each day, for our customers, Andy Chen brainstormed ways to improve the quality of our food, from our in house sauce to our fish providers, creating the signature YamaChen rolls that solidify our place in the restaurant sphere. He believes that his success is due to his motto: Freshness, Sincerity, and Generosity.

Huge space and really beautiful interior
Elegant décor, stylish details, nice music, and a very pleasant vibe overall. It honestly feels new, fresh, and thoughtfully designed — a great place to sit and relax.

The food was fresh and delicious
We tried several rolls, and everything tasted great — solid quality across the board.
Nice little extras
Loved the complimentary treats
Cheesecake, edamame, and a few other small extras were a very nice touch and definitely appreciated.
⚠️ A few things to improve
• Miso soup was on the check but never brought to the table.
• Internet inside is very weak — my phone barely had signal. I could see several Wi-Fi networks with the restaurant’s name, but was told there is no Wi-Fi and wasn’t given a password.
• For to-go orders, we got the boxes but had to ask separately for a bag — would be nicer if that was included automatically.

Ive door dashed food from here but this was my 1st time in the establishment to do to go. The customer service was very good. The layout of the restaurant was nice. I will definitely be coming back again. I had chicken teriyaki, rainbow roll, ironman roll, volcano roll and California roll. They threw in a slice of cheesecake, which was really good… and I didn’t eat all this. The last 2 rolls were mine the 1st 2 were my daughters hahaha

Its a nice atmosphere and a lot of selections to choose from. Always good food. Staff is friendly and attentive. Adamame, fried gyoza, spring rolls, teriyaki chicken meal, spicy California roll and the crazy Yama roll were delicious today.

This is the BEST sushi restaurant in the Hampton Roads area. Every time we go for dinner we get miso soup, edamame and cheesecake ON THE HOUSE. They also have a great live piano player which makes the ambience perfect for good after work relaxing dinner. I usually get their Combo Menu which includes two large 8 piece rolls for only $19.95, the rolls are HUGE and delicious. I always walk out full.

We placed a to go order online and it was ready for pick up exactly when they said it would be. When I went inside the hostess was very kind and happy to be there and handed me the order. They even gave us free spring rolls! The packaging was very neat and cool and the food was also amazing! They’re doing a great job and this is my new sushi spot!

What a wonderful atmosphere to walk into. Very kind employees. Extremely clean, neat and tidy. The food was absolutely phenomenal!!! We were just in awe at the generosity and just all around quality of their sashimi. Our waiter was on top of it, had the best recommendations, best service, and manors. He was very knowledgeable with the menu was able to answer all our questions with ease.
This hands down has been the best sushi restaurant we have been to. We definitely plan to become a regular!
