First impressions are misleading, as you walk in the restaurant has many many impressions of poor quality. From the burnt out lighting to the sticky floors, actually the freezing bathroom that reeks of sewage is the worst, don’t even CONSIDER touching that light switch, in 36 years I’ve never seen a light switch so disgusting before.
But here’s the kicker, as my hopes were at their lowest and my wallet afraid, we got the first food! Edamame, but not like any you’ve had before. BEST edamame I’ve ever had! And it was free! After a reasonable wait we got the food, which also came with free white rice!
THIS FOOD WAS SO DAMN GOOD! Like I’ve had a few seafood boils, from some expensive and cheap places, NOTHING CONES CLOSE! Like holy hell, how did they get so much flavor in everything! I care what a restaurant looks like, but it’s not a museum, I’m there for the food. And I WILL BE BACK for their food despite the many flaws in the building itself!
The staff was all extremely pleasant as well, several people checked in on us and they were genuinely happy and helpful. Some sang while they worked, which is always a good sign that employees are taken care of, otherwise they’d be in a sour mood.
Simply put, what would normally demote a rating to a 2 at most leaves this restaurant with their amazing food and great staff at 4 stars! Check out my restaurant reviews, I’m a tough critic but these guys win in my book!
We had xiaolongbao (Shanghai dumplings,) jiaozi (gyoza,) cumin lamb and the hongshaorou (Chairman Mao’s braised pork belly.) We’d originally ordered the scallion pancake as well, but they were out of stock. Since they’ve only just soft-opened we weren’t too shaken by that. They also brought out an additional chicken dish free of charge near the end of our meal, but we were stuffed and ended up taking it home. I have no doubt that it will be delicious as well!
The cumin lamb was spectacular – it had visible spices and was laden with chilis, which gave it a wonderful dry heat that blew us away (and we have fairly high spice tolerances.) The braised pork belly wasn’t quite as melt-in-the-mouth as when I had it in China, but for Layton, UT it’s a cut above everywhere else. The sauce was delicious, and I love that it was served on a bed of baby bok choi.
The dumplings were where we had a bit of a miss. The jiaozi had wonderful wrappers, and seemed to be homemade, but they were missing flavor and texture beyond just meat on the inside. The xiaolongbao were presented on a fabric cloth inside the steamer basket and it made them hard to easily remove and eat (more than one tore open and we lost the soup that was inside.) They also had very little soup inside, and the meat suffered from the same under-seasoning that the jiaozi had.
The rice took a long time to come out, which was unfortunate with how spicy the lamb was, and when it arrived it was dryer and less sticky than I was expecting.
The service was very kind, but there were several tables and only one person working them, so I think she was overwhelmed and had a hard time getting to everyone. The ambiance is also very seafood boil themed, and sparsely decorated. I’m sure both these issues will get better as they get their feet under them, and I am SO looking forward to going back and trying more of their absolutely delicious Chinese food.
I highly recommend this restaurant – even for people who are more used to American-style Chinese food I think there’s things that will have appeal. This is the most authentic Chinese food place we’ve found North of SLC, and we’re so glad they’re here!
Service was excellent, very attentive hosts. Will be back to try a seafood boil!
