I found this place completely by accident, and I’m so glad I did. I travel full-time in my RV filming dive bars across the country, and I happened to be shooting at another cool spot up the road called The Ski Inn. I met the owners of Wrangler’s Roost there, and they told me they’d be heading back to open up their place in a little community called Slab City.
If you’ve never been to Slab City, it’s one of the most unique and fascinating places in America — totally off the grid, no power lines, no plumbing, no anything. Yet the owners here have built a full restaurant that runs entirely on solar. That alone is impressive, but what really stood out was how incredibly kind, generous, and welcoming they were.
My girlfriend and I stopped in for a root beer float and ended up getting a history lesson about the area and the place itself. Everyone raves about their cheeseburgers (and we’ll definitely be back to try them). The vibe is rustic, authentic, and pure freedom — the kind of place you have to experience to believe.
If you’re looking for something real and completely different, and you’re not too pretentious to embrace an adventure, make the drive out here. Wrangler’s Roost is one of the best and most unforgettable stops I’ve ever had.
