The food is great! Good burgers, fries, rings and shakes! Just a short walk from the Plaza. Love the vintage vibe with turquoise booths and green and pink neon.

A friend and I were looking for a place for lunch today. Most restaurants were closed at the Country Club Plaza, so we went over to Winstead’s.

Stepping into this place feels like hopping in a time machine straight back to the 1950s. The vintage diner vibe is spot-on—from the retro décor to the cozy, old-school atmosphere that just makes you want to linger.

I ordered the double cheeseburger with fries, and it totally hit the spot. The burger was juicy, stacked high, and packed with that classic, no-frills flavor you hope for at a diner like this. The cheese was perfectly melted, and the bun held everything together without getting soggy. The fries were hot, crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and clearly made to be eaten alongside a burger like this.

Overall, it’s a great spot if you’re craving comfort food with a side of nostalgia. Simple, satisfying, and full of character—exactly what a vintage diner should be.

The sweet tea was excellent too!

Fantastic as always. Open 24/7. I always get the triple Winstead with everything. Add cheese and tomato.

I also got breakfast this time. Reasonably priced. Prices have stayed consistent. They care about their customers

The food is getting worse each time I visit the Plaza location. Today I got a kids meal, a double cheeseburger, two fries, and onion ring, large shake and large cherry limeade. The fries were like ice. The onion rings were crispy but tasted very oily. The bun on the burger was stale. The only things that were worth the money was the limeade and shakes. Definitely not worth almost $40.

I had never eaten here until this morning. I had been told that they have tasty burgers, yet I opted for breakfast!

The eggs were “broken yolk” scrambled. I do not like that style of eggs, though it could have been the cook’s preference to prepare this method. I take serious issues with that, yet I never send things back. It sets a tone in restaurants for me; if the breakfast is good I will like the rest of the menu.

Probably would not have thier breakfast again, but I am happy to try a burger sometime!

My server was kind, sweet, and did a great job! The size of the coffee cup is generous and I never saw the bottom of my cup. That made the reasonable price of the meal that much more valuable!

Located in KC is Winsteads drive in (and drive thru apparently) lol. It’s located off of the edge of some ravine? Grass? Nature area? And the the surround buildings are all straight out of 1950. It’s a rather neat environment.

Walk in and we sit where we’d like! It’s this old diner feel and the aesthetics fit the vibe of the staff and place. I will say a lot of the seats were tore up so ew. Our server comes to us and I can smell the 3 packs of newports taking care of the kids this morning and I get excited for the food! We’re not here to pass FDA inspections.

Steak Egg and Cheese 7/10 – I got too much love for this on my story for what it ended up being lol it did its job but oh so underwhelming. But hey for $4.99 it’s better than anything else out there.

Hash Browns 6/10 – great flavor but had the texture that they were in the walk in cooler 45 seconds before.

For $20 I fed bae and I with tip. That’s a W.

This Kansas City icon has been serving good food fast to hungry residents for over 80 years. I have been enjoying the burgers and milk shakes for fifty years at this plaza location. I personally have some great memories of spending time with Family and friends here. A large dining room with a 1950s feel complete with an old fashion jute box. Plenty of off street parking with a drive through that replaced the old car hops that were active here through the 1970s. Be sure to check out happy hour from 3 to 6 pm for half price drinks , sodas and shakes! This is the best deal in town their milkshakes and malts are great!! And a fair value at full price don’t miss it!

This place needs some work done. A deep clean and new booths since almost all the seats have tears in them. Food is consistent and overall good. Service is a hit or miss. Most of the time I’ll get good, friendly staff that are attentive. But the most recent time I was there our waitress low-key forgot us or I don’t know but she let our cups get empty, took down the order of someone else who hadn’t been there as long as we were, when she did get to us she seemed like she was irritated, and at the end it was awkward because we had to get up and grab her so we could pay and leave. But like I said most of time we get a friendly waitress.

The cherry limeade is great, it has a scoop of sherbet ice cream in it.
The burgers were very small….the patty could not have been more than 1/4″ thick. Toppings were minimal and it was bland. The fries were normal frozen fries out of a bag. The onion rings were pretty good. If I go back it would only be for the cherry limeade.

As a European, I have been dreaming to visit an authentic diner for a longtime. This is it!
The diner vibe, the food ready in less than 5 minutes, the chill customer service and the small check.
I visited twice and enjoyed every single bit, onion rings are to die for: big, crunchy and made of real onion rings (not an onion flavored onion). Their drinks and shakes are a real treat!
