Yes, you read that right.
You now literally speak into the electronic board like you’re talking to Alexa or Siri. It listens, displays what you said back to you, tries to upsell you, and then completes taking your order.
Sounds great, right?
No, not great, okay?
Not only is it lazy and unhuman, it got my order wrong. Trust me, I did enjoy my cold Jr. Cheeseburger as much as I would have enjoyed the freshly made Big Bacon Classic that I ordered.
Why did this happen?
Because the human who would have normally taken my order would have keyed it in and handed it to me, and would’ve made sure it was correct.
And, he/she would have made sure I got a receipt, which I also didn’t get.
Service has been lacking at this Wendy’s for awhile now, but this will be the last time I come here.
$12 for a cold kids burger and some old burnt ratchet fries because this billion dollar corporation wants AI to take your drive-thru order.
TRASH!
They asked me to bring the sandwich back in, which meant another trip to the location. My husband offered to go so I could take some Pepto, just in case. When he arrived, they acknowledged the issue and discarded the raw sandwich—but then kept him waiting for quite a while. During that time, the staff repeatedly referred to him as their “favorite customer,” which felt a little off given the situation.
He requested the contact info for the Regional Manager, and the number they gave led to an automated message that said the person was unavailable.
This experience was disappointing—not just because of the undercooked food, but because the resolution didn’t match the seriousness of the situation. I’m sharing this so others are aware, and in hopes that the company takes steps to prevent this from happening again.
As the Pepto settled and my sandwich dreams died, I had to ask myself: If love is rare and chicken should never be—why was mine both?
I went through the drive through and when I got to the window, he lied to me about my order total. I ordered a #1 meal and the screen had said $10.49, but he told me “That’ll be $20.49.” I assumed he had an incorrect order on his screen, so I clarified what I ordered, and he said “Yes, that’s $20.49.” I was completely bewildered and asked “For the one meal?” “Yeah our prices went up this last week,” he said. Having worked in customer service for almost 10 years, I tend to side with employees and give them the benefit of the doubt, but I was still in disbelief so I double-checked the order one or two more times, and he kept telling me the same thing. Finally I said “May I cancel my order?” Only then did he say he was just playing with me. He said he jokes with customers all the time about their order totals to see their faces/reaction.
I didn’t get a name for the employee (or a receipt, actually—I drove away and realized he hadn’t handed it to me and it wasn’t in the bag, either), but I want to try to protect anyone else from the confusion and discomfort I experienced tonight.
He didn’t seem to be truly mean-spirited, but that kind of behavior is not only completely unprofessional, it’s truly unkind. Furthermore, many people are struggling seriously with both finances and food security, so something like this could be a very cruel to some. I’m hoping others are spared this kind of interaction.
15 MIN UPDATE: the manager and the employees didn’t seen to care that 3 different people came in with complaints. They all seemed pretty content too.
