This place is recommended by locals, but beware. Many of the locals are very friendly, but some really just want you to spend a lot of money in town. The trolley tour driver literally told us to “Enjoy Edenton and spend a lot of money,” twice as we were getting off the trolley. I think that’s why this place is suggested by people. It’s expensive and not good. The staff were very friendly, so that was nice.

We were seated in the entry room, which is cold and lacks character. The other room looked like it may have had a better vibe, but I don’t know.

We shared the bang bang shrimp, which were just okay. Six fried butterfly shrimp drenched in sauce. I got the steamed crab meat and peeled shrimp with cheese potatoes and side salad. The salad was mostly shredded cheese from a bag. The potatoes were alright, but it hard to mess up potatoes and cheese. The crab had bits of shell all in it, so I had to take each bit very carefully and pull shell out of my mouth. Nothing was seasoned at all. My husband had the ribeye, and it was disappointing. He asked for it medium, but it was so unevenly cooked that parts were well done and parts were medium rare. About a fifth of it was one single lump of fat…not a normal fat cap or marbling…just a HUGE piece of fat. I would have been embarrassed serving that steak to a friend in my home, let alone charging anyone for it.

And they do charge for it, at a premium, and with a 3.5% surcharge for paying by card. The high price should have more than covered the card fees they pay considering the low quality of food. It sounds from some of the other reviews that the quality used to be worth the price.

No wonder the locals love this place! In town for a work assignment and had to try it out. Charming atmosphere and great food. Those grouper tacos and the dressing are excellent. Had to take the crème brûlée cheesecake home but it was delicious. Portions are very satisfying. Will be back.

We arrived in Edenton on our 6th day in NC. It surpassed all the superlatives we had heard, and our innkeeper, tour guide, and a local historian all separately recommended Waterman’s for dinner. So there was no doubt where we were going ! It was a Friday night, we had no reservations, but we arrived shortly after they opened at 4:30 and were seated right away at a great table. The service was great, the oysters superb. My crab cake was the best I’ve ever had, my wife enjoyed her broiled flounder immensely. The Gaelic Ale was great. I would recommend Waterman’s wholeheartedly if you’re in the area, we hope to return soon.

This place is still in business probably for the lack of other choices in downtown Edenton, but is no match for the Herring Bone, which is on another level.
How sad is to come on a coastal town and be served frozen food. Not to talk about the intestines still dangling out of the shrimps.
Sides taste like taken out of the can, and I won’t be surprised if they actually were.
Just one choice of draft beer. Everything else comes in a bottle.
Service also subpar. A bunch of teenagers will uninterested check on you when they are done texting on their phone.
That would be somehow acceptable if you wouldn’t pay a premium like in a fancy restaurant. But you do.

The atmosphere was small town charm, and the service was outstanding. The food was delicious. We had two of their seafood specials and they were well prepared and served hot.

When we visited here 5 years ago, the food was amazing! Very friendly staff, top notch oysters, excellent sides, and great atmosphere. I asked if I could purchase one of their signature cups with their name on the side, our server and said they didn’t sell them. She talked to her manager and she brought me one from the back that was a little more worn than they liked to serve and gave it to me.

We planned to return and when we were making our plans for this trip, it was all about going back to Waterman’s Grill! We were so looking forward to our meal. It was the only meal we went out to eat for the duration of our weekend vacation. We ate what we brought from home so we could relax and enjoy the quiet without having to venture out for food.

I ordered the fried oyster plate with broccoli & hollandaise sauce, and mashed potatoes, no gravy. My best friend ordered fish and chips with fries and coleslaw. Our food eventually arrived. I had 7 oysters on my plate. Seven. The mashed potatoes were tasty but tepid. This restaurant can’t be accused of overcooking the broccoli. My best friend did something I’ve never known her to do – she put my cocktail sauce on her fried fish, but that failed to make it taste any better. The server admitted that the fish was previously frozen, not fresh. When my best friend asked about her hush puppies, she was assured they would be right out. They were not.

We finally got our checks and my best friend asked for her hush puppies again, in a to-go box. It took asking for them again before she finally got them.

In summary, the food wasn’t warm nor very good. My mashed potatoes weren’t even warm enough to melt the pat of butter on top. The service was friendly but not very fast. I have never left oysters on my plate. EVER. Until tonight. If I’m paying $35 for a fried oyster plate, I expect it to be good. You’d expect a seafood restaurant that is a block from the waterfront to have fresh fish, right?

We won’t ever go back to Waterman’s Grill again.

First time eating at Waterman’s. Honestly, disappointed in the food quality. I had the Prime Rib and it just wasn’t good. Really had high expectations for the food. Great service and atmosphere. Just missed the boat on food quality and taste.

This place was amazing. Incredible food for a really affordable price. I got a trough full of steamed crab, shrimp, and scallops while my wife got a crab cake the size of a Whopper. These came after a huge casserole dish of melty, cheesy, spinach and artichoke dip with great pita triangles. All for only $60.

Can’t beat this place. We will definitely be back.

We saw this restaurant featured on the PBS program, “North Carolina Weekend”.
The crab bites, Manhattan clam chowder, and oysters on the half shell were delicious!
The only negative comment I have is that this restaurant charges a 3.5 percent fee for paying with a debit/credit card.

Ordered the seafood pasta. Shrimp, scallops, peppers, tomatoes with pasta tossed in a pesto sauce. I don’t know if they forgot to drain the pasta all the way, but it was very watered down pesto pooled in the bottom of the dish. Not much flavor at all. Scallops were fishy and gritty. Shrimps were small and tough. I left 80% of it untouched. Server never asked if it was good ok…
