The Washington Street Diner has been a part of Athens, Alabama’s downtown commerce for many years, but ownership and operation has more recently been transferred to Friendship Church.
Friendship’s mission for the Diner is to provide the community with a place to enjoy a made-to-order Southern breakfast and great fellowship with neighbors, while providing food service training to the short term employees. Some of the Diner’s employees are short term because once they have completed their training, they find permanent employment in the food service industry using their newfound skills. Then another person steps in to begin the training process, and the cycle continues. One of the goals of the church is to help people in the community overcom

Fantastic service. I don’t think I’ve ever had my order taken so fast and then my food come out so fast. Reasonably priced and the food was amazing. The pancakes were large, fluffy, and crispy. The sausage was thick and well cooked. Biscuits looked super fluffy.

Regular here. Very pleasant people and food that feels like a proper diner. Has a home-cooked comforting quality to it. Doesn’t break the bank either and hadn’t had any issues since we started making it our regular spot to eat breakfast once a week. I can recommend it to anyone.

Today was the first day we ate at this Diner and we weren’t disappointed. It doesn’t look very big from the outside but it’s got a lot of seating areas. Everything we ordered and ate was really good especially the hash browns. The servers were all very friendly also. We will definitely eat here again!
