This was our second time trying Walt’s Hitching Post. Our group of four had mixed reviews. We had all tried Walts 6 or 7 years ago and not fond enough to return. I convinced everyone it was time to give it another try so we gave it a shot. Made 5pm (when they open) reservations. Get there around 450 and parking lot is completely packed and people lined up at the door. By the time we got to entrance, the line had shortened and they took us in right away since we had a reservation. We were seated in a room close to the bar and greeted by our waitress(es). Ordered a couple of Old Fashioneds, they were average, nothing special. Started with a cup of lobster bisque (this is a tomato base with a lot of chives) not a fan favorite (all 4 in our party agreed there were too many chives and it overpowered the taste of the lobster bisque). Waitress brought out some rye bread which was surprisingly some of the best bread service we’ve had in a long time and none of us are huge fans of rye bread but it worked. Escargot was a hit and surprisingly good as well. Cesar salad was a typical Cesar salad. On to main course and we had the Friday special which was the Tracy Jones 18 oz bone in ribeye with garlic butter and shrimp. The normal menu price is $62.00 for this which is fair being an 18 oz ribeye. However this is where it gets crazy, wr were charged $4.00 for garlic butter and another $12.00 for the shrimp on top so one steak ended up being $78.00. Now anyone who reads any of my posts knows money is not an issue as long as we experience a “decent” meal or at least average meal. Steak came out and looked great. Ordered medium rare and got almost well done but we knew with the amount of people we would be waiting a long time for a new steak so we rolled with it and tried to eat it knowing it was overcooked. Needless to say, this was one of the lowest rated steaks I would ever give. The first bite tasted like garlic but absolutely no other flavor (good thing we paid for garlic butter) throughout the entire steak. It felt as if the garlic was an afterthought to provide some flavor to the steak. Truly disappointed because we wanted to like it – we love great steak (we’ve literally paid hundredes of dollars for steak flights and had no issue)!! Shrimp on top of steak were good so that saved the meal to some degree but shrimp can’t cover not having any flavor. Also had the Southwest Bison burger and that was the highlight of the meal and very good flavor. All 4 in our party agreed that it was the best part of the meal next the rye bread. So sad that we paid so much money for such a mediocre steak. At least half of the group enjoyed what they had. Never thought that we could go wrong with the special which was a normal menu item with two additions. I can’t imagine what it would have tasted like without the shrimp and garlic butter. I guess we will put this on our once every 7 year list cycle which is unfortunate, we really wanted a great steak that was close and right in the middle for all of us to meet.

We love Walt’s! It was sold a few years ago and it’s back and under new management, and it remains a super restaurant. Walt’s is known for its ribs and sauce, and they are good, but I believe their steaks are better. We went on New Year’s eve and it was crazy busy, but service was excellent. It was a bit loud and hard to carry on conversation if you were in the main dining areas, but they do have private rooms you can reserve. Anyway, it’s a great place to celebrate so stop by and enjoy. Just remember to make a reservation first.

This was my first visit, and it’s disappointing to leave a negative review after hearing so many positive things from friends. That said, I want to be honest about my experience. Overall, I found the food to be fairly average and not reflective of the pricing. I paid $65 for a steak that, in my opinion, did not compare in quality to similarly priced—or even less expensive—options at other restaurants. With a total bill exceeding $200, I expected a higher level of quality across the meal.
While my steak was cooked correctly, the sides, including the mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts, lacked lots of seasoning. Unfortunately, this took away from the overall experience. The cocktails and dessert, however, were well done and enjoyable, which was a bright spot in the evening.
Service was also inconsistent. Although we were assigned two servers, we saw very little of them throughout the evening. On a positive note, the table busser was attentive and prompt with refills and clearing plates.
Ultimately, the experience was underwhelming. Given my experiences at other Cincinnati/NKY restaurants in a similar price range, I expected stronger food quality and more attentive service.

The restaurant was conveniently 15min -ish- from CVG, our server Josh was amazing and so fun! First time visiting and cant wait to go back. The menu was amazing!

My wife and I had dinner last night at the bar. The atmosphere is electric. What an old school restaurant celebrating 83 years of existence. Now to the food. She and I split a full rack of traditional ribs, potatoes, salad, and I had to get a side of fried chicken livers. How delicious. The cocktails are perfect. Very reasonable pricing. Now to our favorite bartenders Courtney and Michelle. Do they take care of you!!! Had the pleasure as always for Stefanie manager and Donny proprietor of Walt’s to stop by and chat. You have to try this place

Great restaurant with really good food (not amazing). The bison was really good and the chicken was nothing special. It was fine though. The halit special is good if you like fish. The mac n cheese wasn’t great. The service was good and it was a nice atmosphere that wasn’t too tight or crammed. The free bread is amazing.

It may be that trying to get 10 entrees ready and at desired temp simultaneously could be the challenge.
Personally, my filet which was ordered medium came out well done (no pink) and was chewy. My baked potato was also luke warm.
As I mentioned, others really enjoyed their meals, but I did not taste them.
Overall, I would say that based on the price, we were expecting better. I will try again sometime if I have a smaller group.

The best thing i got was the bread 10/10 i had no idea was completely surprised how good it is, it has a salty crispy crunchy outside and a warm solf inside no butter needed i would eat a whole loaf, the Oysters Rockefeller 7/10, the hot slaw 5/10 the taste is good but only giving 5 tiny pieces of bacon is highly disappointing. the steak 7/10 pretty good no complaints. The ribs are cooked great and have a old style bbq sauce on them, but to me it tasted like straight tomato paste 3/10

Old school type of restaurant, reminds me of some place. My parents would have visited. The menu offered a variety of choices, I found a family favorite hot slaw, identical to how I grew up. I had the steak and mushrooms very flavorful. Would order it again. The service was prompt and fast.
