WALNUT GRILL, American Eatery + Bar
Reviews
After catching a movie at Waterworks Mall, my guest and I decided to stop by the Walnut Grill for a late meal. The location at 911 Freeport Road was fairly quiet, with just a couple enjoying the patio when we entered. However, despite the restaurant being nearly empty, we had to wait at the front desk for a while before anyone came to seat us. We could see and hear the employees chatting off to the side, but they were not paying attention to the front. It would have been great to have been acknowledged upon entering, which is why I’m giving this review 4 stars instead of 5.
Once our server, Rashella, greeted us and seated us near the exit in a cozy booth, the service improved. For our meal, we ordered Seared Ahi Tuna, Chef’s Caesar Salad (with added cheese), Chef’s Garden Salad (with added avocado), and the Blackened Salmon BLT. From the moment we placed our orders, each dish was brought out surprisingly quickly, which was much appreciated.
Seared Ahi Tuna ($16): Fresh and perfectly seared, the tuna had a beautiful presentation with a drizzle of sauce, wasabi, and ginger. The Asian slaw added a nice crunch, and the dipping sauce had just the right amount of savory flavor. It was a refreshing start to the meal. (Photos attached)
Chef’s Caesar Salad ($13 + $1 for cheese): The Caesar salad was classic and satisfying. The fresh greens were generously topped with parmesan and croutons, making for a well-balanced and enjoyable dish. It came out crisp and cold, just the way a Caesar should be. (Photos attached)
Chef’s Garden Salad ($14 + $2 for avocado): This salad was vibrant and full of color. The freshness of the ingredients stood out, with the cucumbers and tomatoes adding a juicy element to the overall crunch of the greens. The addition of shredded cheese made it a hearty option. (Photos attached)
Two Blackened Salmon BLT ($36): The standout of the night! The salmon was perfectly seasoned and paired excellently with the smoky bacon, fresh lettuce, and tomatoes. Served on toasted bread, it was deliciously satisfying without being too heavy. The pickles on the side were a nice touch. (Photos attached)
The total cost of the meal, including tax and cash payment, came to $60.50.
The atmosphere of the restaurant was relaxed, with a well-lit and comfortable bar area. Televisions played in the background, giving it a casual, inviting vibe—ideal for unwinding after a night out. The service, once it began, was pleasant, and Rashella ensured we had everything we needed throughout the meal.
Overall, Walnut Grill delivered a quality dining experience with great food and a comfortable atmosphere. Despite the slow start at the front desk, I would recommend this location for a late-night bite or after a movie.
The portions are excellent for both of them. One order could easily feed 2 people, if not more. Be aware that the prices are somewhat high, but the portions make up for it. There was virtually no wait for takeout, too.
Flavor-wise, I really enjoyed the loaded tater tots. The sauce is creamy and cheesy, but not overwhelming. There is plenty of bacon, which is both smokey and sweet. Some pieces were fatty, while others were more crispy. The potatoes were crispy and well cooked.
Quite a good spinach dip as well. There is only shredded cheese at the top, though. Spinach is well cooked and the dip is creamy. The artichokes are little hard, though, and the bottom is a bit oily. They give you loads of chips for takeout (a whole separate large container)! The chips paired well with the dip.
Overall, I’d definitely return to try out some more appetizers, desserts, and maybe the tacos. The tater tots and dip (as well as the staff’s generosity) definitely changed my perception of Walnut Grill for the better!
When we walked in, it was clear that the buffet was freshly made and stocked. We were the first reservation seating time of the day (10am) and the prime rib was tender and delicious.
All of the food at the chafers were restocked every so often during the time we were there. The mimosas were made correctly (2/3 Prosecco, 1/3 OJ).
The only negative was the one dish I was looking forward to- the eggs Benedict. The hollandaise on the Benedict was….lacking to say the least. It tasted like hollandiase out of a can, and was so yellow it looked like it. I was disappointed to find out it was made in house by the chef, and left feedback before we left that a new recipe to get the tang of real hollandaise should probably be utilized.
For context- the hollandaise looked like the first picture, versus the correct color in the second (neither of which are from Walnut Grill- but taken off of google images). Call me a hollandaise purest- but it should definitely have that tang to it that makes an egg Benedict delicious!
To conclude- we WILL be back. This is a very reasonably priced buffet for the venue, and we will come back on another Sunday in May where we hope that the hollandaise recipe will have been perfected.
Overall the food is amazing and the drinks were just right!
