The sushi quality is exceptional!! Fresh, beautifully presented, and crafted with precision. I was thrilled to see they use REAL CRAB MEAT instead of imitation crab in some of their rolls, something that’s almost impossible to find these days. Their Soft Shell Crab Jumbo Roll was absolutely divine with the tempura texture was perfectly crisp while the inside remained tender and flavorful. You can tell the chef takes true pride in balancing texture, flavor, and presentation.
I also tried their salmon sashimi, which practically melted in my mouth, and the tuna nigiri, which had that clean, ocean-fresh taste you only get from top-grade fish. The rice-to-fish ratio was spot on.
If you’re searching for authentic Japanese sushi near Wheeling, Buffalo Grove, or Northbrook, this is the place. Whether you’re a sushi purist who loves omakase-style dining or someone exploring new rolls, Wajo delivers excellence in every bite. This will absolutely become my new go-to for fresh, authentic sushi in the northwest suburbs of Chicago.
What an incredible find! Wajo Sushi in Wheeling has officially become one of my favorite Japanese sushi restaurants in the northwest suburbs. You can taste the difference in every bite and this is not your average sushi spot. The fish is unbelievably fresh, the presentation is beautiful, and the attention to detail makes it feel like a true Tokyo-style sushi bar.
The biggest surprise? They serve real crab meat! The soft-shell crab hand roll was also outstanding! Light, crisp, and packed with flavor.
Every piece of sushi here has that perfect balance of freshness, texture, and artistry. Whether you’re ordering sashimi, nigiri, or one of their creative signature rolls, you’re in for something special.
If you love authentic sushi in Wheeling or you’re just craving real sushi, make the trip. Wajo Sushi delivers quality, care, and flavor in a way that’s hard to find these days.
Then the rolls came out presented beautifully and blew our minds. The Julia roll had smoky seared salmon topped with crab and was my favorite. We also ordered the cheese crunch which was intriguingly topped with cheeto dust and irresistable. The salmon, eel, and all the fish tasted fresh and delicious and the service from the owners themselves was delightful as well. Can’t wait to come back when I have the chance!
The staff is friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is clean and pleasant. We’ve been here twice now and are so grateful to have found it!
Appetizer – I would highly recommend the Cream cheese wontons and the Jalapeno bombs.
Rolls – I would recommend the Julia roll and the Cheese crunch special. The salmon that is charred on the Julia roll gives it a nice smoky taste that is very unique. The cheese crunch contains a mango that surprising works really well with the cheese texture.
The dragon roll was our favorite.
I ordered a bubble tea, rose deluxe roll, and miso soup for dinner tonight. Unfortunately the rose deluxe roll which was almost $25 came without crunch. It was disappointing to pay that much for a roll and not have it made correctly.
The miso soup was a very small portion for almost $4. I got 3 pieces of seaweed and 3 of the tiniest tofu pieces I’ve ever seen. It looks like they just cut 1 normal sized tofu into 3 pieces? The to-go container was not even full to the top. I got about 3/4 of the cup. I’m a bit confused why I read so many reviews saying it was the best miso soup they’ve ever had. It is just regular miso soup.
Canned bubble tea is not a great idea as the tapioca balls are not good inside. Their texture is probably what you could imagine in a canned drink- rubbery and hard. (Do not have any expectations that this will be like a typical bubble tea).
Anyways, I think the miso soup drawing was sweet but I think I’d just go for something like the regular salmon crunch next time.
One plus is that the salmon was very fresh! I’d be willing to give it another chance. Just seems like they give you very little for the high prices.
