We tried the Detroit style pizza and it was delicious, so much cheese and well-balanced tomato sauce. The owner or chef was soooo nice and friendly. Everyone that came in had a smile and left happy.

Last night I had the pleasure of visiting Volo Craft Pizza in Swampscott, MA — and wow, what an experience!

The ambiance right by the water is beautiful, with Boston’s skyline in the distance, and the service made us feel right at home. Owners Pina and Tony are so warm and personable — it truly feels like family when you’re there.

Now, the food… absolutely incredible. Having grown up with New York City parents (and with my own background working in a pizza restaurant), I know good pizza when I taste it — and this was next-level. Their Detroit-style Double Trouble pizza with hot honey was out of this world. The Caesar salad with fresh-grated cheese was crisp and flavorful, and don’t even get me started on the cannolis with chocolate chips and lemon — pure heaven.

I’d happily drive 35 minutes any day for this. The pizzas are clearly made with love, and I can’t wait to bring my parents back to try it. If you’re anywhere near the North Shore (or even if you’re not) — do yourself a favor and try Volo. Highly recommend!

The Detrout style pizza here is some of the best you can find in the entire US. I’ve eaten at more than 2k pizza places around the country over the past 20 years traveling for business weekly so I have a pretty high bar to judge.
Detroit style cheese: The crust is thick like sicilian but light amd fluffy. Mozzarella is creamy and thick. Sauce is smooth with a little sweet.
Meatball Parm Sub was “the best I’ve ever had” according to my teen.
In an age when more and more places are going to previously frozen, highly processed, and dime a dozen food quality, its great to have a North Shore place that is serving up fresh excellence.

The Detroit pizza is the real deal. Get it! More of a to-go place but had a lovely conversation with the owner and he cleared a small table for us for lunch. High quality ingredients and perfected dough/crust. Got a large Detroit for 3 people and it was the perfect amount (2 thick slices each).

I recently tried the Detroit-style pizza at this pizzeria, and it was absolutely delicious! The crust was perfectly crispy on the outside yet fluffy on the inside, and the toppings were fresh and flavorful. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating, making the overall dining experience even more enjoyable. I highly recommend trying their Detroit-style pizza and also their cannolo!

This was our 1st time trying Volo Craft Pizza. Just how good is Volo’s Detroit Style? For me, it’s about 35 min ℎ in modest traffic & I’d take that drive any day of the week… that they’re open. This was one of the best pizza’s I’ve had, certainly on the North Shore and possibly in New England. There must be 100 pizza joints between my driveway & Volo & I’d have no trouble passing every one of them by. ℎ ‘ how good it was.

We got the Detroit Style Veggie. It was dinner for three of us and breakfast the next day for two. Memorably delicious.

And that might be the problem: It’s hard to imagine properly exploring the menu when that Detroit Veggie is there like a magnet drawing me in to enjoy over & over. But I think I can muster enough self discipline & willpower to branch out to other Volo offerings… maybe on my fifth visit.

The sauce is among the best I’ve had anywhere. The crust has a particularly nice bite – crispy on the bottom, pillowy above, & not on any way gummy. Truth be told, the crust alone is worth the drive so, if you just like a plain cheese, go for it: Volo definitely has the flavors down and Swampscott is so much closer than Michigan.

On ours with toppings, the veggies were delicious & sufficiently present without burying the crust, sauce, cheese. There’s also just the right touch of olive oil so it’s flavor compliments the other ingredients but with no need to blot the top as we’ve had to do too many times at too many elsewheres. It’s a particularly well-balanced pie.

If you’ve never had Detroit Style – I hadn’t – you’re in for a treat at Volo.

Prices are entirely reasonable when compared to their competition especially given the quality of the product.

I called in our order – Volo is – and requested a specific pick up time owing to the aforementioned distance. When I got there, the pie was ready & hot – perfect timing.

As a takeaway joint, Volo isn’t big on ambiance: It’s a kitchen with a front door and a counter in between all built to provide delicious food and easy interactions and, on those criteria, it well succeeds. The one-star off on the atmosphere rating is simply reflective of the fact that that’s not whay they’re there for.

I don’t know if I was just plain lucky or if nearby parking is generally sufficient but I was able to zip into an on-street space mere steps from the front door. That said, if it happens you need to walk a block or three to pick up order, consider it a healthy start to a tasty and satisfying experience & well worth every step.

Can’t wait to go back!

The best NY and Detroit style pizza I’ve had thus far. Savory and sweet combinations are my favorite and they execute this magnificently with their Sirachia pizza. Their topping combinations are top notch from classic to creative, and this little gem seems to be very loved. Despite being tucked away in a little downtown street, this place was flocking with people every time I came around dinner time. Definitely call and order ahead of time. This is THE spot to go for pizza cravings in the North Shore.

Travelled 30+ minutes to try the ultimate Detroit style pizza in Massachusetts, WORTH IT! Volo is easily a top 3 pizza ive ever had and without a doubt the best Detroit style. The owners are not only friendly, but genuine pizza chefs with a dedication to the craft. So glad i came here! The pepperoni and the classic cheese were delicious, cant wait to return and try one of the other variations.
