If you’re coming to Los Angeles from New York in search of Italian food, you’re almost guaranteed some disappointment. That said, Vito’s Pizza in West Hollywood is one of the better “hole-in-the-wall” pizzerias the city has to offer.
I just tried their calzone, and here’s my main gripe: a calzone should not feel like a loaf of bread with a tiny pocket of filling shoved in one corner. The crust ought to be no thicker than that of a pizza, and the ingredients—not the dough—should be the star of the show. From the picture I took, you’ll see what I mean.
On the plus side, the price is fair, the flavor is solid, and I actually really enjoy the atmosphere—there’s a great old-school smell when you walk through the door. But if they added even 30% more filling, these calzones would easily be five-star worthy.
So, should you come here? Yes. Just don’t expect to be blown away.

Order a calzone for take out. Love it the first so I wanted to get another one. I order it online and picked it up. When I got home the calzone was nice and big but when I started eating I was wondering why there was so much cheese and why it taste bland. After a while i realized it’s raw dough. Stupid of me to think the calzone was full of cheese but really it was just the dough on the side that never really finished baking. Probably will not order the calzone from there again. I wouldn’t recommend it anymore.

Great pizza. Much better than Joe’s. The next time I order I won’t get extra cheese because judging buy the amount on the pie normal cheese is enough. Goog taste and bread to sauce to cheese ratio. We will order again for sure.

As someone from the east coast, it’s hard to find good by the slice pizza. Well I’ve found it. The meatball/jalopeno pizza is divine. My girlfriend loved the Hawaiian and the white pesto. The dough is classic East coast tasting. The prices are also very fair. Highly recommend any pizza lover checks this place out.

I will NEVER go there again. The owner is very kind, but the female worker that works there was SO RUDE. Her aggressive nature and her insults were too much and I will never go there again. No one deserves to be treated badly when you walk in for a slice of pizza.

When we tried Vito’s, we ordered a half wild mushroom & half pesto, at the suggestion of a nice lady named Grace. I also got a bowl of minestrone soup, which was supposed to be homemade. What we got was three slices of wild, mushroom & 5 slices of the (cheaper) pesto. Apparently the cook flunked geometry? I know some people enjoy the char, however when it’s completely black, it’s not enjoyable. Not to mention big burnt bubbles. I wouldn’t have bothered to complain, (although we were disappointed)
The last straw came when the $10. Minestrone was 95% salt water/tomato juice, & a few spoonfuls of beans at the bottom.
I even poured the soup into a Pyrex cup to separate the liquid from the solid & my suspicion was correct!
I am including photo documentation where you can see the burnt pizza& the minestrone soup. The last picture of minestrone soup comes from Marie’s Italian restaurant.. I just wanted to show what REAL homemade minestrone should look like.
Now, I never would’ve posted this review, I took the pictures because I wanted to show the manager so they could troubleshoot.
I called & was told the manager was Grace. I left a number and she would call me back. No call back. I called again the next day & Grace answered the phone. She was very rude and hasty, however explained she was swamped & would call me back. Never did. So, I wanted to give her the benefit of a doubt, so I called again the next day.
Left number. No call back. I almost wish Grace would’ve told me that she was not gonna call me back instead of pretending! Becz she had no intention of calling me back! I do have to say that the small percentage of pizza that we did get (that wasn’t burnt) was good. But Paying $55 for 4 pieces of pizza is not worth it. Mistakes happen, but having management that has no concerns for the happiness of the customer? I’d go somewhere else.

“We don’t have sausage patties, we aren’t McDonalds”- overheard the attendant taking a phone order, LOL. Vitos moved about three doors down from where they were. The new place is much larger. The pizza was crazy good. #NYStylePizza.

After an extended hiatus from Vito’s, I visited last week. It wasn’t the amazing pizza it once was – but still solid East Coast slices. During this visit, the dough was a undercooked and chewy. Hopefully it was an off day. I’ll definitely return and try again.
