The menu offers an inspired fusion of flavors, and every dish I tried now that this is was my theirs visit, was outstanding. Their pho ga was rich, savory, and perfectly balanced deep, fragrant broth with tender meat, fresh herbs, and noodles cooked just right. Their lemongrass banh mi was crisp, flavorful, and loaded with fresh ingredients. I also sampled their Vietnamese coffee — bold, smooth, and a delightful finish to the meal.
What really stands out is their genuine attention to detail. Portions are generous, ingredients feel fresh, and presentation is thoughtful. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable, always ready with recommendations or to customize a dish. And, the owner actually comes around and chats with the his clients and checks on us.
If you’re looking for authentic Vietnamese cuisine in Honolulu served with heart, Viet Chubby Boy is a must-visit. I’ll be returning again and again — highly recommended!
The menu is extensive typical of a Vietnamese restaurant, but I am here to try the Pho. The broth is very light, but beefy. Not too sweet. But its missing the essence of the spices, like the cinnamon, star anise, cloves, coriander seeds, cardamom and fennel. Also the smokiness of the onions and ginger. I just prefer my pho broth to be heavier on the spices. But I still enjoyed it. The rice noodles was perfect, and the meat toppings is a little on the stingy side. Also only one size bowl.
I also tried the Summer Rolls with BBQ Pork. It was just average to me. Service was good, attentive and refilled my water when needed. Came to check on me a couple of time. My Mom called me while eating and I ended up ordering the Chicken Pho for take out for my Mom.
They did get busier after I sat down with mostly take out orders.
I will definitely come back again. I like the convenience of satisfying my Pho cravings and I don’t have to drive to downtown/Chinatown.
Finally walking into the restaurant, it actually appears like less of a hole-in-the-wall on the interior than on its exterior.
I ordered the Beef Noodle Soup and the Vietnamese Coffee. I thought that the soup had a sufficient amount of meat in it and wouldn’t have even been skeptical of the amount of other reviews had not mentioned that the meat servings tend to be sparse here. The soup came with a good amount of leaves and bean sprouts to add to it, and it could feed two people. The Vietnamese coffee was a pleasant surprise as well, turning out to be a sort of coffee slushee.
Price-wise, I wouldn’t call this place cheap, but it’s also not expensive.
Overall, I am pleased with the Viet Chubby Boy!
On my first visit, I tried the Lemongrass Banh Mi—crispy, fresh bread packed with perfectly marinated meat and bold flavors. The next day, I went for the Bun Cha Grilled Pork and Summer Rolls, and both were absolutely delicious.
If you’re craving legit Vietnamese flavors, make sure to check this place out. You won’t be disappointed!
The service was great with a friendly attitude. It’s a small space so they are able to frequently check on their patrons and refill water in a timely manner.
The atmosphere was simple. Not a big place for crowds, mellow music was playing at a comfortable level that talking at you table was manageable and you didn’t overhear neighbors or have to shout to talk to each other.
Overall, this was our first time and it wasn’t disappointing. If the opportunity comes, we would eat here again.
However, the drip coffee was excellent. Just don’t come by later and tell me to pour it into the cup of ice I asked for like you did next time. Clearly, since I ordered this drink that’s not even on the menu, I’ve eaten Vietnamese food and drunk this drink before and know what I want and how/when to do it.
The chili paste I also asked for that you had and didn’t automatically bring out with the hosin and Sriracha sauces were also excellent.
All in all, I would come and eat here again.
