Stopped by for lunch. Ordered a miso salmon bowl and the chicken katsu sandwich. Both were very tasty .
The salmon bowl was quite a large portion. Dressing was good.
Chicken sandwich was interesting. Black beans added a nice element. Fries were thin and tasty.
Would definitely come back again.
I have to say that this place gives much better quality food for the money than another restaurant up the street with similar offerings, where the proteins I would add to my salad (or included in a bowl) would be half the size of what I got at this establishment. I wonder if the less eye-catching counter might be too utilitarian for some diners. People do eat with their eyes first. I noticed the walls were mostly unadorned too. Maybe some posters of the great food might help stimulate some appetites?
I know the photos don’t do justice to how good outlets orders turned out. Trust me, they were yummy.
Staff was great, friendly and efficient.
The guy at the register didn’t know what type of steak is in the steak dish (it’s skirt steak). To me, knowing your menu is a basic 101 question at work.
I debated between the steak dish and the barbecue blackened chicken and I ended up choosing the chicken.
I envisioned a piece of chicken … a whole piece of chicken. It advertises as gluten free so I didn’t ask for it to be made gluten-free. Unfortunately, they put a piece of bread on top of my food without asking me.
They did deliver it to my table, at which point I let them know that I had ordered the sweet potato fries and I was allergic to wheat.
They did not remake the dish, they simply took the piece of bread off, and gave me some fresh sweet potato fries.
Unfortunately, that really messed up the temperature of the food. By the time they brought it back, my chicken was cold, lukewarm at best, yet my sweet potato fries were piping hot and very good!
It was unfortunately a mediocre experience.
I’m giving extra credit for the guy who came up to answer the “ what kind of steak is on the steak dish” question. He was helpful and friendly.
Restaurant is 3.5 / 5 clean. The bathroom could really use attention. It needs deep cleaning, nothing that’s recent.
Even though they were not busy when I walked in, (8 pm on a Tuesday night) and they seemed to have plenty of staff, there were quite a few tables that had not been cleaned off and the floor needed attention.
I don’t think I’ll be back yet it’s a good option for a less expensive meal in the Burlingame area. This is a great, walkable town with lots of options to choose from!
Their Brussels sprouts are so savory and delicious too, they’re marinated perfectly. Honestly, try them, they’ll change your life.
The wraps were the thing to get here or the entree plates.
My initial thoughts when I visited this “restaurant” last week was to give it 3 stars, but as I continued to think about it, I think it is deserving of 2. Let’s go through everything, shall we?
The service is extremely minimal. It operates more like some kind of cafeteria. You order by the cash register and get a table number, pick a table, and they bring you your food. That’s it. They do not even bring you your water- you have to grab it yourself.
This does not seem like an issue until you look at the prices. These are not even restaurant prices, these are like fine dining prices. Up to $10 for appetizers and $20-30 for main courses. It only gets worse when you finally see the portions. I ordered a mac-n-cheese appetizer because I refused to pay the abysmal price for any of the bigger entries, and it was served in the most shallow bowl I have ever seen. It did not even come with any sides or special toppings, unless those little crouton crumbs somehow make it worth that $10 price tag.
But wait, there’s more! It was not even good. It was horribly bland, and I could only finish half of my plate before I had to box the rest. I did not know cheese could even be that flavorless.
I truly cannot comprehend why Urban Kitchen has anything more than 3 stars on Google at most. If you do not mind paying a lot for food, good for you, but mediocre food? The only, and I mean only reason it does not get a 1 star is because the location and atmosphere was pleasant. That’s it. Oh, and the employees were fine, but they are not related to my review.
Cheers! 2/5.
