We came to UPS N’ Downs for dinner before the Santa Clause Parade. My wife and I both got burgers (Brit Burger & Mushroom Swiss Burger), my daughter got the kids size fish and chips. Everyone enjoyed their meals, and the kids fish and chips meal was a generous size and comes with dessert. The Brit burger was better than the Mushroom Swiss (more flavour and oddly less dry$. The fountain pop being $3.75 with no refill is insane. I’d call this an average experience in terms of sit down restaurants.

Waitresses talked shit about us when we asked to move tables because we were seated right by a draughty window, with one of them saying “well they’d better get appetisers” (we did). Food was very underwhelming, and the ribs were inedible the were so dry. My husband was served a different beer every time, even though he kept asking for the same one, and they all tasted watered down. Service wasn’t great, yet there is no option to not give a tip when you pay by card. Definitely wouldn’t go back.

Went with a party of 5. Was greeted by Julie who was very friendly and accommodating. Food was very good. We asked to move seats as it was a little cool near the door. No fuss was made and they were very happy to reseat us. Fun atmosphere and our waitress was excellent.

I went there to try the famous curry. They told me it wasn’t spicy so I asked them if they could make it spicy. When It arrived it was in in edible as it tasted as if someone had dumped a bag of cayenne powder on it. when I told the waitress her response was well, I guess you shouldn’t have asked for it so spicy she did not offer to fix it and mentioned twice that it was probably my fault for asking. The dish arrived with a ton of white rice in the middle and the curry going around the edges of it. There was so much onion and so little chicken. On top of this. I ordered a bottle of white wine which came to the table warm, and when I asked for an ice bucket, my request was ignored.

We were really excited to dine here with friends because of the restaurant’s reputation for being knowledgeable about food allergies and offering an extensive gluten-free menu. Our waitress was excellent—thorough, attentive, and very understanding when we placed two orders with food allergies.
When one entrée arrived with bread on top, we immediately asked about the ingredients. The waitress handled it perfectly, acknowledged the risk, and took the dish back right away to be remade.
Unfortunately, what should have been a straightforward situation became very uncomfortable when another employee (an older woman) inserted herself and took over the interaction. Although the situation was already being handled, she proceeded to question us at length—over 15 minutes—about how bread could be a cross-contamination issue. After we explained, she repeatedly emphasized that everything in the kitchen was cross-contaminated, including the gluten-free area, essentially convincing us that none of the food was safe.
She then pointed out my shellfish allergy and said they “have it all over back there,” followed by telling my son—very loudly and directly—that they “have peanut butter everywhere,” which is his allergy. This drew a lot of unwanted attention and made him extremely uncomfortable. As soon as she left, he said he was too afraid to eat his buttered pasta (which can be made safely without cross contamination with ease). I was also left anxious about finishing my meal after how the kitchen was described.
To add to the confusion, this directly contradicted what our waitress had assured us—that the buttered pasta and my meal could be prepared safely. With such conflicting information, we no longer felt comfortable eating. We travel a lot with our food allergies and keep our order very simple to reduce risks. We also know not all restaurants can accommodate us, which is why we do a lot of research prior.
As we were leaving, the same employee stopped me again to say she was glad I “educated” her about the bread and mentioned she had spoken to the cook. She then went on to complain about other customers’ dietary requests, mocking things like lactose-free Caesar dressing. She also made an unsolicited comment about hating America after asking where we were visiting from, which felt inappropriate and unnecessary.
Overall, this was a very upsetting and bizarre experience. While our waitress did everything right, the behavior of the other employee completely undermined our confidence, frightened my child, and ruined what should have been a positive dining experience—especially for a restaurant that advertises itself as allergy-aware.

I rememeber coming here years and years ago. Maybe over ten. I was standing somewhere I guess I shouldn’t have been and the staff yelled at me like crazy. Absolutely no need for that, but clearly they hate their jobs. I’m sure this “creature” is surrounded by lots of cats right now.

Anddd look at all the negative reviews… Lots of them recent too. This place was always a hole and I guess that’s how it somehow stays open. It fits in Sarnia quite well lol. Full disclosure I have a dog and two cats. If that lady has any animals or kids I feel bad for them…

I picked up a fish and chips off the kids menu and a poutine thinking I was only a little peckish. There was so much food for $25! Kids menu comes with a generous portion of ice cream and a juice and the poutine for $10 was the largest I’ve seen in Sarnia. Menu is huge and has something for everyone, lots of gluten free, lots of seafood. Great service too! Amazing over all!

The food was really great. But the service was outstanding. Everyone was so friendly and took totally awesome care of us. It was the best place I have ever eaten at.

The food was okay, but they charge you $3.75 per fountain pop that has no refills. I think the last time I went to a restaurant that didn’t have free refills on fountain pop it was the 90s. Even fast food joints give you refills.

Ups N’ Downs was an excellent experience overall! We went there because my friend is diagnosed with celiac, and she had done the research and found out they have separate fryers for gluten-free and offer gluten-free fish and chips! She had that (with sweet potato fries), and I had the regular fish and chips. Everything was delicious. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals, and we had excellent service. It was a nice restaurant, not too loud, and it was a nice walk by the water to get there. Too bad we were only visiting Sarnia, or we would definitely go there again!
