Welcome to Upper East on Grand, Historic Downtown Escondido’s newest neighborhood restaurant and bar. Locally owned and located in the “Upper East” area of San Diego County. We pride ourselves on selling quality food and beverages. Our menu is compiled of our spin on classic American dishes as well as some favorites from our sister restaurant, Knotty Barrel Rancho Peñasquitos. Enjoy our locally sourced menu with a full bar offering seasonal cocktails and some classics with a twist, as well as a wide array of domestic, imported and local craft beers on our 20 taps. Upper East brings a new family favorite to the neighborhood while also accommodating those who are looking for a great happy hour, spot to catch the game or dine out on the town.

I’m a bit overdue reviewing Upper East, mostly because there has been a crowd every time I have tried to sit in for a meal. Today however, it was very well worth the wait, and I understand why the crowds are at Upper East. Honestly, the food was amazing – well seasoned, presented well with an ideal portion size. The Tuna Melt for my wife clearly was meeting above her satisfaction and expectations, with the pickled jalapeños being a surprise. The Grilled Chicken Sando for me visually appeared to have a thin cutlet, but truly was perfect once biting into it – overall an excellent chicken sandwich with all the right ratios of add-ins, especially the bacon (outstanding!) The hidden gem of a Salted Caramel Brownie dessert was also amazing…we asked to omit the salt, yet even though the sea salt was unintentionally added, the manager took care of us. In fact, our server and the manager was immediate and rapid to the task. It was more than a pleasant dining experience…it was a reminder to come back and try other menu items. I highly recommend Upper East. I observed the build-up of this shop since Summer 2025, and the time and effort shows the level of investment the owners are committed to for entertaining the strong Escondido population. This is not a fly-by-night restaurant. It is a serious place for a wonderful meal where the team takes pride in their customers. We will return for more…just hoping we can get a table fast since we now understand the demand and appeal.

Today my friend and I had lunch at Upper East. I’ve been wanting to try it since it opened and it was worth the wait. We had the Buffalo and sweet chili wings and split the carnitas sandwich with truffle fries. Everything we ordered was fresh, hot, and delicious. I had the old fashioned and it was excellent. And I want to give a shoutout to Jon, who provided us excellent service even as he single handedly provided bar support for all the diners. He’s friendly and attentive and we appreciate the experience he helped create. I will definitely return. Thank you, Jon and Upper East!

Me and my friends loved our trip to Upper East. Everything was well flavored and balanced. The fried are perfectly crispy! The pasta was al dente and well flavored! Lots of sports on! We’ll be back!

My husband and I went on a long hike up in Palomar Mountain to burn some calories, and on the way back home we realized we’d probably burned a bit too many. We stopped by this place and had an amazingly delicious burger and an even more delicious salad, and in the end, I think we ended up taking in a lot more calories than we burned on the mountain! It was totally worth it, though.

The smashburger was really good. Great battered fries. I got the carnitas mac my first time here, and it was amazing.
Definitely plan on being a regular here ❤️

Really good food and great drinks. Fun atmosphere with all the sports games on but very classy aesthetic. The food is also very good and I thought it was a good selection. I had buffalo wings and a spicy italian sausage rigatoni. My pregnant wife loved the fried pickles appetizer. Staff was very pleasant and attentive. It was a packed night so maybe took them longer than I would have liked a couple of times, but not longer than was reasonable considering how there wasnt an empty table in the whole place. Overall very good experience.

So I was searching for a new place to try out and i came across this place. I read a bunch of reviews and decided to give it a go. I came here on 9/10/25 it was pretty slow at around 5pm it took 5 -10 minutes before anyone came over, I think it was a manager who finally asked if anyone came to me. So finally a waitress came over, I read a lot of reviews about their ELOTE so I ordered it. To me it was really nothing special, I’ve had way better and way more flavorful Brussel Sprout dishes, nothing about the dish really stuck out to me. I also ordered carnitas mac and cheese and this dish was average at best, it lacked the name of the dish CARNITAS. I wondered if there was any carnitas in the dish at all, the flavor was very sub par. So unfortunately my experience was not what i hoped. I dine out frequently and unfortunately this place will not be in my rotation. I wish them nothing but success.

Fast forward to 2025, and we began hearing rave reviews about Upper East on Grand. While new restaurants often start strong and fade fast, we decided—after months of buzz—to see for ourselves.
We were warmly greeted and promptly seated by the hostess. After looking over the menu, we ordered:
Pretzel with Cheese
Smashburger
Skirt Steak with Fries
Fish and Chips (Kids’ portion)
The food was fantastic. The portions were generous, but even more impressive was the quality of the ingredients. The skirt steak, with its perfect sear, was a standout. I also sampled the Smashburger and Fish & Chips—both delicious and definite reorders for next time.
Upper East is truly a breath of fresh air for the local dining scene. The menu isn’t overly ambitious, but the execution is flawless. Service was excellent, and we’re already looking forward to our next visit.

We had a great time, food was good. Bartenders were awesome, until we got home my wife dropped her wallet. We noticed when we got home, i called and the manager saw my last name on the caller ID, knew exactly why i was calling. Everything was in there as it should be, thank you to all that work there. On top of the great service food etc we will definitely be back. Thank you all that work there!!
