I had a couple of nice lunches here a year or so ago, but dinner tonight was largely a disappointment. The French onion soup was lovely and our server polite and apt enough, but everything else was below par. I rated the decor poor to fair because although the setting is generally nice, we found the background music (American 70’s pop radio) and televisions over the bar completely incongruous with the otherwise fairly intimate, white-tablecloth dining style. The croissants couldn’t have been anything other than Pillsbury, the duck was overcooked and over-peppered, and the vegetables uninspiring. Like the unhappy contrast of the pop music to the intimate setting, the mushy white rice with wild rice was incongruous, and just plain weird. This seems to us a restaurant that just doesn’t know what it wants to be.

Tried out Union Brasserie for 5280 Week, last night. The service was fine, the staff seemed friendly, the decor was ok and the restaurant was clean. We were excited to try it out as they claim fresh in-season produce and well sourced proteins, etc. However, the food was severely lacking. We had the 5 course 5280 menu, and my guest and I “split the menu” so we could try more selections. The appetizer for both of us was a duck pate crostini. The pate had a rough chewy texture, heavy allspice, zero salt and was very dry. The next course was soup. I chose french onion while my guest chose butternut squash with tomato. The french onion had no seasoning at all and some of the onions had obviously burned during carmelization because the soup had a very dark, burned aftertaste. My guest’s soup made no sense at all, it was very bland with a hint of tomato. It tasted like a tomato soup that was diluted with water and had a strange aftertaste. They put dried (not fresh) herbs in the soup and several stems were found in the soup as well. Overall a very poor decision to mix butternut squash with tomato. It lacked flavor, acid and salt. Then the salads arrived. Not much to say here, but the ceasar dressing was the worst I’ve ever had. It somehow was very spicy, yet it had no tanginess and no discernable flavor or seasoning. The entrees arrived and the disappointment continued. I ordered the pan seared wild sea bass. This is the first time in my life that I’ve hated sea bass. It was cut as a steak rather than a filet and cooked… to… death! Horribly dry, no seasoning, no flavor. It was served on what I guess was supposed to be a pineapple saffron risotto? Whatever it was, it was mushy, flavorless, seasonless and zero taste of saffron or pineapple. My guest ordered a “Prime” filet mignon. First of all, I thought it was illegal to engage in false advertising. In no way was that meat prime. It had the texture of choice at best. Once again like a broken record, no seasoning (zero salt or pepper – on a steak!). It was served with mushy roasted potatoes and an unidentifiable brown sauce. The steak however was cooked to temperature. We ended up leaving during the entree and had the waitress pack our dessert. The next day I wanted the dessert (tiramisu) for breakfast and ended up throwing it away as well. It was dry, lady fingers were not soaked in anything, and lacked sweetness and cocoa. So overall a complete waste of $77 and an otherwise nice Friday night. Apparently the chef has no tastebuds and cannot afford salt or pepper. Also I recommend they update their menu to reflect the fact that they do not use fresh ingredients and they do not have prime beef.

We did not eat here because no one took our order. We sat down, given water and waited for someone to take our order. It would be nice if our waitress would have least acknowledged we were sitting down, but no one came by for about 10 minutes.
The items on the menu were between $12 – $22 and looked really good. We will likely not go back though because of the service.

Amazing! Didn’t know what to expect when I walked in, I had never heard of the place. But what a fabulous restaurant. Atmosphere was relaxed but classy and the food was some of the best I’ve ever had. Everything is obviously homemade and very fresh. Service was also excellent. Will definitely be back. Highly recommend
