Cool place, definitely would go back whenever I am in Washington.
The egg on my sourdough “egg toast“ was perfect, with the yolk soft but not runny, and the white cheddar cheese was nice.
I had a Dirty Chai, which I really loved: espresso, chai spice and steamed milk. It was just the right sweetness.
The building used to house a hat factory and they have examples of them above the doorway to the restrooms, which were clean and bright, like the rest of the place.
Just kind of a cool place all around, and like I said, definitely would go back again!
Close to the Amtrak station and the riverfront, and in the historic area of downtown Washington.

I fell in love with this place years ago when living in Villa Ridge. I’ve since moved an hour away and still come back a few times a month. The coffee flights are my absolute favorite! I used to get the same drink every single time, with the flights I get to try new things and discover fun new drinks that I never would have tried before. The food is top tier. I’ve never had anything off the menu that wasn’t absolutely fantastic. The vibe is incredible, and I love the outdoor seating. There’s just something about a great cup of coffee watching the river flow by that’s good for the soul. I highly recommend!

Undergrounds is a great coffee shop. They specialize in every type of coffee drink you can imagine, and their food offerings are excellent. I especially love their avacado toast. The kitchen staff will cook all sorts of breakfast items to order, and their sandwiches (breakfast and lunch) are unique and wonderful. The service is top-notch; they give you a beeper when you order, but most of the time, they are at your table with your order as soon as it starts beeping! I enjoy very much the view of the Missouri River, through the windows and from the large outdoor dining area. The decor is modern yet rustic, and they have spacious, clean restrooms.

Our coffee flight was delicious, there wasn’t a flavor we didn’t like. I got a frittata which was amazing and great portion for the price. My husband got the granola bowl which was also super yummy. Service was friendly and fast, and they have such a nice vibe. Definitely recommend.

We needed a place to land during a home inspection plus we had our little dog. We were able to bring him inside during the cold weather & let him relax in his mini crate. Coffee was delicious and we shared a grilled cheese sandwich. Perfect local stop that gave us a hide out in a pinch!

Updated July 2025- Our second visit wasn’t as great as our first. All of our bread items were stale. We had the egg toast, fruit toast, bourbon donut and cinnamon roll and all of them were stale. Service is still great. Coffee and prices are good and atmosphere is wonderful.

Love the vibe and the great selection of baked goods. I wish they had more options for frappés and flavored coffees, but the vanilla bean was still good. If you’re more of a die hard coffee fan, without all the syrups and whipped cream, this is your place.
Update 5/16/22 – Love the new place! Great selection of choices for food, bakery and coffee! Server was so sweet and thoughtful. Absolute best cafe food in the area. They finally have blended and flavored coffees! If you’re in the area, definitely give Undergrounds a try!
Update 10/15/2023 – The food was fresh, much more upscale than normal cafes, and I love the abundance of options. The bakery case was full of decadent looking treats, from huge groumet cupcake, to croissants, brownies, eclairs and more. Clothes, pins, cigars, etc., But above the delicious treats and beautiful ambiance, the customer service here is amazing — so refreshing.
Definitely one of my favorite bougie coffee shops ❤️

i loveee this place!! it’s always so cute and everyone is so friendly! i go here almost everytime i have a day off work lol. the coffee is SO good. my favorite is the honey lavender latte!! the food is also INCREDIBLE! it’s so adorable in here & the service is excellent! very fast & always perfect! i will always recommend this place to anyone!

Was visiting from out of town & it looked like a cute place so I decided to stop in. The atmosphere is adorable, food looked good but I didn’t eat anything, just wanted coffee. Staff could have been more friendly/welcoming but the coffee, while not the worst it wasn’t great …No flavor other than just coffee & milk. I ordered an iced peppermint & my friend ordered pumpkin & they both tasted the same, not even a hint of flavor.

Loved our visit. The decor, the feel…everything. Ample outdoor seating with great views, although we preferred to be indoors. Wonderful service.
The gooey butter cake is easily the best I’ve *ever* eaten. The dirty chai was decent. Avacado arugula toast with an egg was good but I wasn’t wow’ed by it like I thought I would be. The toast was a bit tough but the dish was flavorful. I would have loved a bit of fresh arugula on the side, but didn’t think to ask.
Hubs had a grilled chicken sandwich. It was good but again, nothing set it apart as an “OMG I NEED THAT AGAIN!” dish. He said the bourbon pecan sticky bun was good, as was his latte.
We will definitely visit again on our next trip through Washington!
