Social Profile:

UnderBelly is our interpretation of a Japanese ramen-ya. Rooted in our local culture, which is reflected in the beer program, it ultimately serves as a tribute to a culture and food for which we have a deep appreciation and respect. This is a tribute to traditional Japanese ramen houses, specifically paying homage to the ramen gods of Tokyo.

Snug counter for hearty bowls of ramen & Japanese comfort grub in an industrial-chic setting.

I’m a firm believer that people can make or break an experience, and the team here is the absolute gold standard. To be completely honest, the food wasn’t really my favorite—it didn’t quite hit the mark for my personal tastes—but I am still giving this a full five stars because of the incredible staff.

From the second we walked in, we felt genuinely welcomed. The workers are some of the kindest, most attentive, and friendliest people I’ve encountered in a long time. They went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and happy, and that kind of hospitality is increasingly rare. While the meal itself wasn’t a standout for me, the service was world-class. If you value being treated with genuine care and a smile, this place is well worth the visit. A huge thank you to the hardworking crew.

My first time to this spot. Pretty affordable for a party of 2 drinking only water, 2 Ranen bowl & a side of kimchi. Ramen was plentiful & delicious, you can easily SHARE a bowl. Cozy atmosphere w a nice fire at most tables. Beware the sauce that looks like p-nut sauce is actually SPICY.

The atmosphere was causal and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about all the dishes. Service was quick and efficient. The tables were very comfortable with plenty of room to spread out. We got a little bit of everything and enjoyed all of it. I would maybe go back again. Not really my style of food and parking is challenging. They do have items to fit most people’s tastes. The cocktail’s were beautiful and creative. The ice in my drink made it hard to drink. It was like hail. Very tasty though.

Somewhat medicare food with tepid staff. Strangely, not very good.

The sausages are delicious! The ramen almost tastes like instant ramen- just not great.

The staff seemed put out when asked for anything, like every patron is a bother to them.

The food was mostly fresh, just not great.

Looks as good as it taste! Or maybe better. We got the Farmers Market (add eggplant wrappers tofu and egg) and the Thai curry ramen.

Hands down THE best ramen I’ve had in SD, I liked it better than Menya or Nishiki.

The reason I’m giving it 4 stars is the poor lighting in the bathroom

Ordered the short rib bun which admittedly was one of the better buns I’ve tried recently. The farmers market ramen lacked layered flavors resulting in a forgettable end product. The kimchi was alright and the chicken confit ramen was decent but not desirable. The atmosphere and service were great but overall I found the establishment unremarkable.

As you know, parking is always tricky in North Park but there is plenty of parking available in the neighborhood.
The service was so quick. We got water and as we turned around our food was already delivered to our table. They have self serve water (plain and sparkling) outside. I love how spacious outdoor/bar seating is on the patio. The music was great. A great vibe overall. I definitely recommend giving this place a try if you’re in the area and craving some bomb ramen!
Food review:
Underbelly ramen: (5/5) The noodles, meat, and broth were all perfection in this bowl of ramen! It was a good portion and the meat was SO tender and delicious!
Tonkotsu ramen: (5/5) The noodles were cooked perfectly, pork was tender and flavorful, the soft boiled egg is always my favorite part, and the broth is delicious, I could just drink bowls of it. It’s not super heavy and has so much flavor.
Beef gyoza: (4/5) These were tasty, but there was not as much filling/meat inside as we like.
Short rib bao: (3.5/5) The meat was very tender, but the coleslaw and spicy mustard didn’t mesh well together in my opinion. I ate the meat, pickle, and bun and it was delicious. It comes with 2 buns, so plenty to share!

Great environment but the staff here definitely need some help with preserving taste.

This was the worst ramen I’ve ever tasted , and the after taste I’m experiencing is definitely evident of the cross contamination taking place between cleaning agents and food preparation.

The cook is cleaning as he goes which is great– HOWEVER, not once did he change his gloves— again, I can LITERALLY taste the cross contamination of whatever cleaning solution or santizer that they use.

Also the meat in the belly of the beast ramen tasted I had tasted spoiled as if it hadn’t been rotated out.

One star because the lingering disgusting aftertaste is and the manager not seeming to care.

I literally told her and she said, “I’ve ever heard that before.”

CRAZY WORK.
Do not waste your money here.

I definitely get the hype for this ramen because it was delicious. I ordered the Chicken Confit Ramen and my husband ordered the Belly of the Beast Ramen. Both were so good. The chicken was so tender and basically shredded the more I mixed the reamen. Also the short-ribs and the oxtail dumplings had such great flavor. Some of the best broth we have had. It was so creamy and not separated and watered down, it was perfect. We also had the beef gyoza and spicy garlic Edamame, both great. I love the vibe here too. You walk in and order right away then it is open family type seating. It was nice talking with others at the table we shared with. Service was fast and they made sure to check up on us incase we needed anything more. We will definitely be back. I recommend this place.
