Opened in August 2000, Umi Sushi Bar & Grill was the dream and vision of Brian Mao — to create an establishment that was both hip and authentic, offering a refreshing atmosphere filled with energy and dedication. His dream lives on; in his memory, the restaurant has proudly retained its integrity under the sole proprietorship of Mei Mao, a local Austinite you can often find relaxing with our loyal patrons. Why do they keep coming back? Because there’s always something new to try. The world may be ever-changing, but remembrance is what defines who we are.

Love these foods, very freshly especially rice for sushi was warm like they just made. Banana tempura ice cream is amazing it surprisingly! The service is amazing, she knows little sign language to communicate with me.

Yael made our night at Umi Sushi in Austin. From the moment we sat down, she was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming without ever hovering. She knew the menu inside and out, gave thoughtful recommendations based on what we liked, and timed everything perfectly so our meal felt relaxed and seamless.
The food at Umi was outstanding—fresh, beautifully presented, and paced just right—but Yael is what made the experience feel special. Big mama roll (as recommended by our waitress) was delicious, so was the sashimi and fried vegetables. The meat on the bento box was not my favorite, but was still edible. Creme brûlée was to die for. Service was friendly and attentive, atmosphere was also good.

I had planned out an entire date night for me and my boyfriend and our last stop was here to get drinks. I told him how much I loved the place since I first came with some friends a few days ago and this experience changed my opinion completely. We wanted to relax and have a couple of drinks and as soon as we sat down I could tell we were not welcomed. We showed her our IDs and immediately were told “what do you want”, the tone was a bit rude but I decided to ignore it but as time went one and we ordered our second drink I noticed other people were getting hugs and warm welcomes while we just got met with the same tone like we were bothering her being there. I don’t think I will ever come back or recommend this place again but I will say the DJs they have there are absolutely AMAZING and I will miss hearing them play 🙁
