Umai is a truly special restaurant. Our group ordered a wide selection of dishes, and each one had its own distinct flavor profile and was clearly prepared with care.
Standouts like the beef bulgogi, spicy pork bulgogi, jalapeños, and curry katsu were bold, deeply flavorful, and absolutely knocked it out of the park. At the same time, more understated dishes like the mandoo guk, gyoza, soft shell crab, and chirashi had very subtle, nuanced notes while still delivering wonderful flavor and texture. Everyone agreed the miso soup was the best we’ve ever had.
We also enjoyed a wide variety of sushi, and there wasn’t a single miss. The fish was prepared beautifully. Even the simplest item we ordered, an avocado roll, was soft and made with care.
We cannot recommend Umai enough!

Umai in Braintree is the newest sushi spot on the South Shore! Family-owned and run, everything is truly made with so much love and care. The staff is so friendly and accommodating.
The sushi was really fresh and reasonably priced with generous portion sizes. Everything was plated so beautifully. I was really impressed by their Salmon on Fire. literally on fire ($17) and Salmon Truffle ($17) with gold flakes and LITERAL truffle pieces.
I also tried the South Shore Maki ($17) and Tornado Maki ($17). The South Shore Maki is one of my favorite makis right now. The wasabi mayo paired with the mango filling made the best sweet, savory, and spicy combo with crunchy tempura flakes. I liked the Tornado Maki as well; the snow crab was really delicious.
Overall, Umai is a small but mighty restaurant. Located unassumingly in Braintree, they’re serving up some high-quality and tasty dishes. Definitely recommend giving them a try!

NEW- Loved this spot! Great location for quality sushi in the south shore area.
Price is very reasonable and fish / scallop in sushi is super fresh and portions are not small!

Nice little sushi restaurant. The sushi feels more authentic Japanese style with the delicately, sliced fish and small rice ball for the nigiri. The flavors were subtle and tasty in the various nigiris, and the fish was well aged with nice texture and umami. Highly recommend.

This newly opened Japanese restaurant is very good. I enjoy the miso soup, sushi and sashimi combo. Fish is very fresh , big portions and reasonably priced. The BBQ eel is the best in town. The atmosphere is so cozy and welcoming. Try it out when you are near by.

For anyone who has yet to try this new restaurant I highly recommend making time to sit and try as soon as possible. I happened upon it the day they opened found a number of unique menu items to try I haven’t seen anywhere else in my many travels. Each and everything I tried was exceptionally fresh and delicious. Highly recommend this even if you have a good to place you are missing out if you don’t. If you are unsure about where to start the friendly staff is very helpful with recommending dishes and they serve a variety of equally delicious Sakes/ Rice wines that pair nicely. Take out experience is also very good if you can’t find time to sit in for the full experience . Umai does presentation right but I didnt have my phone just trust me when I say you won’t regret making the time to try what they have to offer.
