UKIAH Japanese Smokehouse is a unique concept created as a collaboration between a group of friends. James Beard Nominated Chef Michael Lewis, Steven Haigh and Lizzy Maynes joined forces with seasoned restaurateur Michael Sponaugle to create a neighborhood restaurant serving Japanese soul food mixed with American BBQ.

Paired with a bottle of Chenin Blanc each plate delivered on taste, creativity and presentation. Julian was great, every bit as knowledgeable and friendly. Really top notch service.
Highly recommend you try the restaurant now before the word gets out and it becomes impossible to book. 5Foodies all the way!
The food was truly amazing. The chicken on the chicken and waffles was perfectly juicy, the buffalo shrimp was packed with flavor, and the prawn was a great size and cooked just right. I could honestly go on and on. The drinks were also delicious — and if you’re a martini drinker like me, you’ll love that they have blue cheese–stuffed olives.
Despite the rocky start, the team genuinely listened and made things right, which says a lot. I highly recommend giving Ukiah a visit, and definitely ask for Joia — she made all the difference.

I would recommend to try the tasting menu the chef has bc it is an experience of its own.
Thank you for great service Sam, and team!
As soon as I walked in, I felt welcomed and cared for by the host and a gentleman (I wish I got his name). Every server/staff member who walked by greeted me with a smile and checked how I was doing. That was so sweet.
Jay was our server for the evening, and he was so kind and attentive to us. Our lemon drops were perfectly crafted, and the shot that Damien created was a literal flavorful party in our mouths. The passion fruit foam, immediately yes!
The food? I already knew it would be amazing based on my first experience at the pre-opening. Hence why I’m back. It was my treat to cousin for her birthday. She couldn’t stop raving about how delicious every option was. Compliments to the chef(s).
That COCONUT CAKE – is the chef’s mom recipe. Momma knows what she was doing with that recipe, and I love it even more that the chef included it on the menu.
Lastly, hi to Angel, who was sweet from the first time I came. His service is memorable.
Thank you, Ukiah. I’ll be back soon. Please share this message with your staff. They should know the amazing job they’re doing.
I’ll keep it short tonight, but we went with the avocado salad, karaage chicken, street corn and baby back ribs. There wasn’t a disappointment among them! Everything was executed superbly and paced perfectly.
Congrats on an excellent meal!
