Twisted Oak Barbecue has THE BEST beef brisket in town BY FAR. Since moving to Charlottesville from Texas, we have had trouble finding comparable bbq and have tried many places all over town claiming to have “Texas style beef brisket”. None have come close.
However, after trying Twisted Oak for the first time today, I can say with confidence that Mike has true AND exceptional Texas style brisket. The brisket was tender, moist, juicy, and has an excellent smoky flavor. We also got to try some of the turkey, which was delicious! Other bbq places had meat that was so dry and flavorless, that you needed a gallon of bbq sauce just to achieve any sort of smoky flavor profile. With Twisted Oak, both the brisket and turkey could stand alone delivering flavor-packed bites without any sauce! It really is THAT good.
Now, a note about the owner and operator. Mike stays busy with catering, being opened for lunch, and making game day tailgate packages. Despite that, Mike was so easy to get in touch with for inquiries, and especially hospitable and accommodating. We gave him a call to ask about his lunch options/availability and he invited us to come pick some food up to try despite being primarily opened to deliver tailgate orders on this particular day. Mike was kind, engaging and offered such friendly service.
Overall, coming from a barbecue snob, Twisted Oak is clealry leagues above any other bbq in town. We can finally take comfort in knowing that we have Twisted Oak to fill the brisket-sized hole that we’ve had in our lives since leaving Texas. Although we’ve only had the brisket and turkey thus far, we can’t wait to try more.

This unassuming BBQ car by the train tracks at Meade / Carlton is, and I shit you not, the best barbecue I’ve had since I moved from KC to the MidAtlantic.
Their Brisket sandwich with slaw was spot on. Fatty juicy bits mixed with just firm enough meat, a simple light bun and a side of pickles and pickled red onions.
I’ll come back every weekend to try the whole menu.
I’d give it six stars if I could.

We hired Michael and Twisted Oak BBQ to cater our recent staff lunch, and the experience was simply wonderful. Michael was so easy to work with, helpful, and no drama. The food arrived ahead of schedule, piping hot, and filling our space with the most exciting aroma. I’ve never seen our staff so ready to eat! The meal was absolute perfection–tender, flavorful, and simply delicious. So great, in fact, that we’ve hired them to cater our fall retreat as well. Could not recommend more highly!

Twisted Oak came to our neighborhood for our weekly food truck night and it was AMAZING!!! I typically go for the chicken and turkey options since I don’t eat beef or pork, and let me tell you, I think this was the best chicken I’ve ever had in my life. Ever. I can’t wait for them to come back to our neighborhood next month. I will be ordering a few of the half-chicken orders so I have plenty of leftovers for the next few days! Thanks for coming out to our neighborhood!

drove from out of town, only to arrive to a closed truck well past opening time. update your hours!! for a place only open three days a week during a small time window, your online presence and accuracy is important. it takes moments to update your open and closing times from the convenience of your phone. a total waste for us.

Absolutely excellent BBQ! The pulled pork was perfectly prepared and served the way the good Lord intended, with slaw. To top if off, the pit beans were exquisite. Drop what your doing and go!
