Established in 1953. Evan Christou is a third generation restaurant owner at this location. His grandmother’s brother purchased the original rail car diner located at the five corners in 1953. In the mid 1960’s, his father’s brother, Peter Christou, brought in a brand new, modern modular style diner to replace the rail car. In 1983, his father and his partner Uncle Nick, doubled the size of the restaurant by adding a dining room. So, in staying with the family tradition of keeping up with the times, his father and himself ventured into a total rebuild and rebranding of Tops in 2006. Tops is just over the city line in the town of Rotterdam

Despite living fairly nearby, this is not a place that we get to. We were headed out that way and stopped for lunch. It was a very pleasant experience. My wife, who had never been here remarked on the name of the place that it is a grill, bakery and bar, but it is. The bar is not like a typical Diner bar with four bottles of liquor, but a full bar that I imagine people come to to do what people do at a bar. We were not that adventurous and sat at a booth for lunch. Our tastes were simple, breakfast food for lunch. My wife had eggs and I had an omelette. I eat omelettes very often at diners throughout the area so I feel that I am a pretty good judge. The first thing that impressed us on the menu was a notice that they had not increased their prices since the pandemic. along with this was a true apology that because of the price of eggs they needed to add a 50 Cent surcharge per egg. The way it was presented and just knowing what is going on in the food market made me quick to accept the surcharge but also thankful for their keeping prices moderate. Heather T was our server. She was efficient, pleasant and funny. She made sure we had plenty of coffee and anything else we needed. The omelette was great, and even with the 50 Cent surcharge was below the price is charged at comparable places my wife’s eggs were done over medium as requested. we came knowing what we wanted and we got it in a pleasant atmosphere with nice people. Perhaps one of these days we will try the bakery or bar portions of this establishment. The menu is extensive as this is a diner that stays open for dinner. I know we will be back.

We do not eat out frequently, but when we head to the Capital District, it has become our habit to head to Tops American Grille. The food is always excellent and hot! In all our visits, we have never had a bad meal. The service is friendly and generally attentive. Our most recent visit was on Valentine’s Day. Our server, Nikki G. was excellent! She was very attentive, friendly, and intuitive; not requiring our asking for things we might need. She was always ahead of us. She even brought the owner to our table to say hello. It was a totally pleasant experience.

I drive past this place often and was happy to stop in My waitress Claudine knew exactly what she was doing The menus got a lot of great stuff on it and the prices are very fair I know why the place was packed I liked the atmosphere and decor they also had bakery items as well as a full bar so I was able to have mimosas The portions are large I took a cinnamon roll home with me which was amazing and my husband tried some apple cheesecake which he said was also amazing

Went for breakfast. Ordered mediterranean omelette. With rye. The omelette was typical. A little overcooked – I like them fluffy, this was not. But the potatoes (home fries) had seen better days. Like they had been on the griddle all morning (we got there at 11 am). They were so overcooked they were hard and dry and dark, dark brown. I ate about half of them. Price was good, clean, very busy, but service was good.

Convenient comfort food not far from the highway. We had a French dip and a Reuben which were both very good. The coffee was full of flavor and a great pick-me-up before getting back on the road. Service was speedy, friendly, and professional.

Food was excellent, both of us had the Roast Pork Dinner with Beef Barley Soup.. $16.95.. Waitstaff was working solo, dispite having and issue with her hip.. She was pleasant and you could tell she has been doing this gig for a while.. Plates were hot(a must for me) food was hot.. all flavorful, spiced perfectly for my partner and I.. we each brought half of our meals home… hotess was pleasant and accomodated my spouses request for a table for her disability, well after being put on the waiting list.. It was 11/23 Sunday 11:45am and busy.. Good job guys… One downside was that we were put into a back room at first we thought bummer… but it turned out very well, we could talk to each other over the din of the main Restaurant.. This will be a Sunday go to for us for a while, coming from MIddleburgh NY
