The place is pretty comfortable and the system is fun. There is an inconvenience which is that it’s hard to see how full the bottles are, so sometimes you get a half cup, only get a little bit before the bottle dries up, and then you have to go inform the bartender who has to open a new bottle and eyeball the fill on your glass before replacing the empty one on the machine. On the other hand, there is a wide variety of wine to choose from, and the appetizers we ordered were good: a pretzel, the medium-sized cheese table with crackers, and some chocolate. This should have made for a pleasant experience, if it wasn’t for one thing: that the person tending the counter on that day was extremely rude.
So, this system of self-serving wine is not self-evident and nor is it common. When we said it was our first time, and how does it work please?, instead of being welcoming, the bartender was curt and tried to make us feel like idiots; in fact, this was her behavior towards us throughout the night. She would stare blankly at us after we finished talking; she would be curt and make us feel like we were wasting her time or asking stupid questions, even as we tried to keep the transactions brief or simply order food, or tell her a bottle in the machine had emptied. She did not seem to act this way with any other of the customers, with whom she seemed friendly. I have no idea how we offended her to be treated like that. I wondered if it was my accent (I am an immigrant) but the other two women with me were American and were treated the same way. The three of us are or have been in the service industry though, so she did not succeed in making us feel bad; we just laughed about it and did not let her ruin our rare girls night out. But boy she did try.
They offer so much more than great wine—Toot + Kate’s is a true community hub. Their events, immaculate vibes, and creative collaborations are always intentional, fun, and beautifully done. Megan, Liz and all of the staff are knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely cares about helping guests discover something they’ll love, whether you’re a seasoned wine drinker or just starting to explore.
What really sets them apart is how deeply they support and invest in their community. They lead with generosity, create space for connection, and consistently lift up other local businesses along the way.
If you’re looking for great wine, great vibes, and a place that truly embodies what a neighborhood wine bar should be, Toot + Kate’s is it.
