I ended up ordering the Reuben and it was huge, which meant I got to eat the other half the next day. We also got the pastrami obeyed and it was fantastic, too. Sides were French fries and coleslaw, both hot and cold respectively. Loved the pickle with the sandwich. Just Go! You won’t be disappointed.
The chocolate layer cake is a completely different cake than it used to be. It’s lighter, has almost no flavor, and has completely different chocolate mousse filling and icing than it used to. I was extremely disappointed and can’t say I’ll be rushing to come back. My family has been coming less and less because the food and service has gotten worse and the prices have increased significantly, and they really only go when I’m in town but it’s looking like that might not be the case anymore.
It wasn’t even busy.
This order was for my Mom in the hospital for 3 weeks whom I told I would bring her a Reuben and carrot cake. I get to the hospital and there’s No extra sauce, no pickle, no Utensils, no ketchup. How am I supposed to feed my mom fries with no ketchup, sandwich she couldn’t eat because I had no utensils to cut small pieces for her and she LOVES pickles. This is the worst excuse for your Reuben sandwhich that I’ve ever seen. To make matters worse EVERY SINGLE EXTENSION YOU PRESS DOES NOT WORK-THEY TAKE ZERO PHONE CALLS AND THERE IS NO WAY TO TALK TO A HUMAN
Richie was our server. At first, he looked like any other nice server, until we’d been there five minutes. It became clear Richie knew everyone else who came in by name. His New York accent came out. He took care of everybody.
Especially when the gentleman in the booth behind ours knocked over his water. Richie was full of jokes, reassurances and helpfulness.
I only remember his name because when it was time to pay, our server said, “No problem. You just pay Richie.” Then we saw later his name on the receipt was Richard.
His New York accent made my pastrami on rye taste better. Excellent matzo ball soup, as always. Steve got the country fried steak and it hit the spot.
TooJay’s has a bakery case that makes people salivate, with delectable black and white cookies, rugelach, and huge moist frosted cakes. We e gotten their Thanksgiving Turkey dinners with pie in the past. Never had anything bad there. It’s all good at TooJay’s.
Service was great and didn’t feel at all rushed or ‘hovered over.’
Tables were nicely spaced apart, too.
Highly recommend !!!
Update/New entry:
This visit I got carryout – the soup & 1/2-sandwich combo, and a couple of sides to take home for later.
I got their beef & cabbage soup – delicious, and Very filling – I highly recommend it!
I do have to make a comment about the corned beef. I used to order this because it had not a bit of untrimmed fat on it, but that has changed now. The slices of meat are a great deal thinner and every slice has more fat attached than I want to eat. Since prices went up, I know of many restaurants that have modified selections and/or servings. And I’m not singling out any 1 location, because this is the 2nd location (within about 2 months) where I’ve experienced exactly the same thing.
I will continue to frequent Toojay’s, as there are great deal of very tempting dishes here that I’ve yet to try!!
