We ordered the Family Feast which is $78/pp and our server asked if we have any dietary restrictions. Our food and drinks we ordered were amazinggg! We will definitely be back next time and they’re on my list of favorite places to visit! Our server is also very nice and was offering to take pictures of the people he was serving. They were attentive but not too much especially where we were seated.
Maybe one thing I’d say is, we wish that the kakigori mentioned it was mainly grapefruit (it instead mentioned the orange and pandan which were the sauces on top of the whipped cream), and their website can be hard or annoying to deal with with all the… Floating vegetables passing by as you’re trying to read. Lol
Go here. Get the family feast. Enjoy it. The true stars of the feast are the Caesar, rice cakes, and pork rib. All alone are worth getting. The beets are a work of art. The dessert was a perfect pairing to wrap up the night.
Go live. Go eat. Go to Tomo. It’s worth it.
Side note, the carb rice was meh, shoulda gone for the chicken instead. It was almost there but the dish had no depth in flavor, just kinda flat lined. Other than that, everything else was truly exceptional.
We were seated in front of the kitchen and observed how each dish was crafted with the utmost care and attention. Every course was incredible and featured a creative fusion of Asian and American cuisines done right. It’s hard to pick my favorite dish because I loved everything: albacore tataki, scallop hand rolls, dungeness crab rice, and their pork chop ribs.
I have eaten at many fine dining and Michelin starred restaurants and Tomo stands out even among those. Tomo is also comparatively affordable, especially considering Seattle prices, without any sacrifices to premium ingredients, service, or even ambience. Tomo may be small and in an unsuspecting location but it is mighty and deserves much more praise! We will definitely be coming back.
My two favorite dishes were the Tomo Caesar and Ahi tataki. I thought the Ahi was really the star of the show, but the pork rib chop was also fabulous. The dry aged steamed burgers were good and well executed, but not mind blowing. The Japanese shaved ice was interesting and seems to change the most often. It looks massive, but I promise it’s lighter than you think!
Would absolutely return again to try more dishes. Do make a reservation, the dining area is small and this place is popular!
The food is underwhelming overall. The ideas were good but the execution was not there.
When I tasted the dishes, the image got into my head was a young chef that has some innovative ideas and tries very hard (and perhaps uses some cool and/or time-consuming techniques) but doesn’t get the fundamentals (eg. Flavor balancing) down. It’s all imaginary, sorry for being so blunt.
Some dishes are better than the others. Our favorite was the pork rib chop.
The price is also hard to grasp. I’m guessing it was designed to reflect the effort (vs the product).
The service is very nice.
The vibe is a bit pretentious.
TLDR: Some thoughtful dishes and clearly high-quality ingredients, but the menu felt conceptually uneven and execution was hit-or-miss. A couple of items felt out of place or overly simple for the price. Nice ambience and polite service, though pacing was erratic. Overall, you can tell they source great produce, but the value of the experience is debatable.
See also Ryu Jones’s review (sort lowest to highest) which I felt was close to my experience.
We picked the Family Feast (winter menu) and were served the following in order:
1 Tomo Caesar | Really umami dressing. I could taste the smoked bonito.
2 Albacore Tataki | The yuzu sauce was very refreshing.
3 Dan Dan Beets | This didn’t taste like Dan Dan sauce to me, but if you look at how Dan Dan sauce is made, the nutty element from tahini is there. So they did try to respect that.
4 Cacio e Pepe Rice Cakes | Not a fan. The rice cakes tasted like the frozen ones from H Mart lol. I personally don’t like rice cakes anyway. I joked with my dining partner the cost of the dish probably sits in the sauce.
5 Dry-aged Steam Burgers | This and the dish before felt out of place. It basically felt like fancy meat between King’s Hawaiian rolls. Cheddar, patty, caramelized onions, burger sauce… but the acidity was missing and the onions weren’t caramelized enough to bring out their sweetness.
6 Klingemann Farms Pork Rib Chop | I liked this. Served with lettuce and shiso leaves. I noticed different vegetables from other reviews, maybe seasonal changes. The pork quality was great, sous vide then seared. The sauce leaned Thai/Viet-inspired; I could taste garlic, soy and fish sauce.
7 Cara Cara Orange Kakigori | I’m in a blood orange phase so I liked it, but not enough to pay $20 for it alone. Layered with whipped cream, pandan drizzle and I think passion fruit sauce. The whipped cream layer felt like a separate dessert. Together the flavours didn’t fully complement each other. I also saw another review where someone’s dessert collapsed on the table layering cream inside kakigori might be why. Just put it at the top or bottom.
Ambience: Nice space, but a party of 6 near the entrance was extremely loud and somehow their voices carried through the venue. The group of 5 next to us wasn’t nearly as disruptive. The bar also looked quite small? maybe 6 seats?
When we sat down we could smell a strong cleaning solution (bleach?) and it lingered through dinner. 🙁
Timing: I noticed many complaints about seating, but we had reservations and were seated promptly.
Dish pacing was erratic, similar to other reviews but we weren’t waiting 40 minutes between dishes nor dining for 4 hours. I’d attribute such experiences to staff shortages.
Value: The first thing I saw on the menu was the $16 chawanmushi and my eyes nearly fell out of my socket LOL.
Most of the ingredients in the Family Feast were top quality (aside from the tteok and slider bun). As someone who cooks a lot at home, I can appreciate they work with great suppliers.
If we hadn’t used the credit card benefit, the 22% mandatory service charge on top of tax would feel steep. Was the service bad? No. The servers were polite, but explanations of the dishes were inconsistent. Some introduced the dishes in detail, and some did not.
WA is a state with one of the highest hourly wages, and this is an establishment recognized by the food crowd. Premium pricing is expected. But the 22% service charge goes to the restaurant, and diners have no transparency on how much actually reaches the staff. Conclude what you want from that.
What really took away from the experience was the pricing structure. A 22% service charge feels excessive, especially for a spot in White Center with fairly standard service — nothing particularly extraordinary. On top of that, taxes are added separately, which makes the final bill feel even more inflated.
Not a bad meal, but the value just didn’t quite match the cost. With more reasonable pricing or clearer value, this could be a much better experience.
Would order again:
Caesar: perfectly balanced and loved the take on the classic
Cacio e Pepe: rice cakes had a great chew without being tough and the sauce was a classic cacio e Pepe flavor, with the consistency on the thicker side
Crab rice: deep seafood / crab flavor. Rice texture was fun with some grains being slightly al dente. Thought it be a bit thicker, like a risotto but was slightly looser than expected.
Would avoid:
Albacore: liked the sauce/broth it was in, especially the peppercorns but the albacore tasted slightly too fishy for my taste
Cheeseburger: there were like hard/tough chunks in the beef which gave it a weird unpleasant mouthfeel but the flavor was good. Nothing to write home about
Chicken: the coating was addictingly savory/ sweet with the outer crust almost feeling like it was candied. But in some places, the breading was just so thick- most of the bite was breading. But in terms of finding a filling dish- this one is definitely it
Service: was fine, we prefer hands off service but had trouble flagging down our server a few times
