In 2016, the Japanese government honoured Chef Tojo as a Goodwill Ambassador for Japanese Cuisine, distinguishing him as belonging to the top tier of Japanese chefs in the world. If that isn’t respect then I don’t know what is.
Chef Tojo has been a heavy weight contender and influencer for DECADES. He paved the path for generational chefs to grow and be innovative. The man is over 75 years old and when he worked in Vancouver in the 70’s he faced a staggering amount of racism from locals, and sushi itself was seen as bizarre and foreign. He has earned his stripes without a doubt and unknowingly created a huge presence of loyal supporters.
Chef Tojo and the culinary team. You will always have a special place in my heart from the years of dining. There have been many memorable moments. Thank you so much. You represented Vancouver exceedingly well. I don’t know any other Japanese Chef that has received this much honour and recognition. You’re a legend.
The waiter and waitresses are all hospitable and they are glad to initiate a chat or two during the meal. Like other Japanese restaurants, they will spend some time to introduce each dish as they come to ourtable. Absolutely perfect dining experience. Arigado.
However, the $700 Valentine’s set menu felt significantly overpriced for what was served. That total included just one bottle of beer and a $45 bottle of sake, which makes the overall cost even harder to justify. While I understand premium pricing for special occasions, this felt excessive relative to the experience.
There are many other restaurants offering the same or better quality for $300 plus. I would not go back at that price, and I would not return just to pay for a name.
We visited for a Valentine’s Day omakase. It was a pre-set course menu, not à la carte, so everything should have been prepared and timed accordingly. I honestly cannot believe they charge $300 per person for this level of food and service.
In an hour and a half, we were served only three dishes. Meanwhile, four other tables that arrived 20 minutes to an hour after us finished their meals, paid, and left — and we still had not received all of our courses.
They even skipped one of the courses and served the next dish without it.
The food was not terrible, but it certainly was not impressive. The steak was served somewhere between lukewarm and cold, clearly losing heat before it reached the table. If I had to say what was the best part of the entire meal, it would honestly be the whipped cream on the dessert.
We went in with very high expectations after hearing that this restaurant was opened 39 years ago by the creator of the California roll. That history made us even more excited to experience it. I even tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, wondering if perhaps the server was new and still learning. However, if a restaurant has been operating for 39 years, proper training of new staff should absolutely be part of their responsibility.
Overall, this was a deeply disappointing experience. We went to celebrate a special day with someone special, hoping to create happy memories, but instead we left feeling upset.
The service was hit or miss depending on which server was helping you- some were not able to speak much English and so didn’t explain anything of what they were serving, while others were fantastic and informative, adding to the dining experience.
Overall, not sure it’s worth >$440 for two people, but it’s worth trying once 🙂
