TJ’s Baroda Tap has quickly carved out a loyal fan base since new owners reopened the iconic corner pub at Lemon Creek Road and 1st Street in downtown Baroda, Michigan. While the building has seen a few name changes and owners over the years, this latest incarnation is clearly hitting the sweet spot with its mix of comfort food classics, creative specials, and a staff that treats you like family.
Though the menu shares some greatest hits with its sister location—TJ’s Sports Bar & Grill on M-140 in Watervliet—there’s plenty that’s unique to Baroda, and locals are eating it up.
Our first dish was the towering Classic Smashburger. Two seared 4oz patties brought the beefy flavor, but stayed juicy inside. American cheese, shaved lettuce, tomato, pickles, grilled onions, and a creamy house-made “smash sauce” turned this burger into a two-handed, napkin-requiring masterpiece. It’s messy in the best way possible—don’t even try to eat it pretty. We paired it with their thick-cut Sea Shore Fries—skin-on, seasoned with sea salt, black pepper, and garlic. You can also opt for Crinkle Cut or Zesty French Fries if that’s more your vibe.
The kitchen loaded up Crinkle Cut Fries into our Bluegill Basket, which is my “go-to” at the Watervliet location. I love the flaky, tender, and mild-tasting bluegill flesh with subtle sweet notes. The light dusting of seasoning in their mix really accentuates the sweetness of the bluegill. I catch and cook bluegill often and have tried without success to duplicate their seasoning blend.
Then came The Hammer. And wow—this sandwich doesn’t play around. Picture a full pound of hot shaved ham, stacked with melting American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo, all tucked between thick slices of locally-made sourdough that’s grilled just enough to hold it all together. It’s smoky, salty, juicy, and completely over the top. The fries were the Zesty variety this time, which were thinner but nicely seasoned. Pro tip: If you can’t finish The Hammer in one sitting, don’t worry—it makes a great breakfast, too.
To seal the deal, we munched on the Loaded Nachos. The photo doesn’t do its mammoth size justice—this mountain of chips comes smothered in taco meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, olives, and jalapeños. You can upgrade to chicken, steak, pulled pork, or brisket for just a few bucks more. It’s so massive they send leftovers home in a pizza box. (True story: Shelly and I took ours to my parents, and they got three more meals out of it!)
The bar itself is warm and inviting, centered around a horseshoe-shaped setup with a solid beer tap list—or “Baroda-Soda” as they like to call it. It’s the kind of place where you’re just as likely to make a new friend as you are to find your new favorite comfort food. You mostly likely leave with a box of leftovers.

I ordered the brisket mac wrap and it was extremely soggy smothered in barbecue sauce to the point where you couldn’t even eat it with your hands. The chips were also soggy and rubbery, almost impossible to chew.

This place had great food just a few months ago, so I’m not sure what happened. The brisket didn’t taste smoked at all, and on the quesadilla it was shredded like a sloppy joe smothered in barbecue sause also instead of proper brisket. They really like the barbecue sause now!!!

I probably won’t be coming back, which is disappointing because this used to be a really good spot.

Stopped in while checking out a few wineries in the area. Just wanted a snack so got the appetizer sampler. The food was good. Heard the burgers were good, and will have to try one the next time I’m in the area. The ambience was nice inside and the place was clean.

I suppose the pizza was pretty good by local standards, but the Italian Pizza Parlors I grew up frequenting has a more (in my opinion) flavorful tomato base. To be fair the menu does say “Cheeze” pizza.
The potato skins were plentiful and tasty.
We had a wonderful waitress, named Chey, who was very efficient, courteous and knowledgeable.
Being members of the ‘older set’ the noise that some call music was somewhat objectionable to us.
I have now eaten pizza at this location since my first time ever at Bill’s in 1958, dined at Jim’s most often, and stopped by only once when the con-artist owned it.
I think TJ’s is a welcoming, clean and reliable addition to the area.
The menu offers a whole lot of choices, so I am looking forward to trying more.
The bar offers everything anyone would want.

So I passed this place Friday night. And decided to get some take out, on Sunday as went back by it. And I am sure glad we stopped in. The bartender was so nice.
We got a smash burger, a steakhouse smash burger and onion rings and breaded mushrooms to go.
And let me tell you, the food is amazing. And I couldn’t eat my whole burger. And the onion rings are made fresh. And they are fantastic.
We will be back for a date night.

Absolutely amazing bar and restaurant. One of the few places I’ve been to that still serves food until 11pm. Came at 10:15 and quickly was served with our meals. Which might I add were extremely fresh and delicious. I tried the their burger which was cooked to perfection and very juicy. The fries were also extremely crispy and soft on the inside. Overall was a very pleasant experience. Will definitely be coming back.

Our serve was fantastic! We had a party of 20+ and she had several other tables and she managed it professionally. It’s possible they are understaffed but the staff they had was top notch.
Drinks came out quickly.
The food was very good. My one beef is the smash burger. Smash burgers should be as thin as possible not thick. Just call it a burger.
Others had the brisket, burrito, and perch and everyone loved what they had.
Great place and good value!
