One of the nice things about coming here is the free Texas tumbleweed that they bring to your table when you arrive. There were 3 at the table. I was told this was a normal case that they bring this out. I’m unsure if it’s one per person. My only criticism is if it is 1 per person they should bring it out when the other two guests arrive as at the time we were not there so it was getting cold.
Navajo fry bread sliders 5 stars
Chicken sandwich 4 stars
The brisket sammich 5 stars
Rib and 2 meat (brisket and pulled pork) 4.5 stars
Outlaw creamed corn 4.5 stars
Peach mango tea 5 stars
Coleslaw 4 stars
Fries 3.75 stars
I’m told the sides are the stars of the show here. We were warned about the fries. They used to make them in house but changed to a more streamlined version. The coleslaw was good but I think I might have preferred the poppy seed. I plan to try that next time if I get a chance
The peach mango tea stood out. It’s got flavor but no sugar. This might not be good for others but for me it was fantastic.
There seems to be a bit of confusion about the amount of meat that comes on the platter. I checked the reviews and a response was that it is 3 oz, but the server did say it was 4 oz.
Service was a mix.
We had an order (I noticed they do sell them in orders of 6) of tumbleweeds dropped off at our table by a different server. We informed them we did not order them. The person said they were told it was for this table. The server came by and we hold our server. The server took it back.
When he was there he was very friendly and personable. At times it was absent, but maybe their patrons prefer to be left alone in general? I did have to ask for a refill by going to the counter once, but after that time he checked up much more.
I do want to return and see if they are consistent.
Light and airy coleslaw
Corn bread is a house recipe I can’t get enough of!
French fries were ok, husband liked them and at 2.99 for a good amount.
Texas Tumbleweeds which are
Deep fried potato, bacon and cheddar cheese
Omg really an amazing flavor of love!
Regular BBQ sauce was tangy spice that wasn’t necessarily my favorite but I believe a flavor of a Sauce is up to you!
Excited to try other meats at this establishment
If your barbe down the street ran out, give Tired Texan a try.
I’ll preface all of this with the following: Do not eat a heavy breakfast before visiting TTB as you will kick yourself if you’re not able to finish your meal.
The thing about TTB that stands out among two other alleged BBQ places in the area is the authenticity. Famous Dave’s slathers their sub-par fare in sauce (the BBQ equivalent of dousing a well-done steak in ketchup) while Hog Wild tries to come off as down home. However, their dry meats require as much sauce as you can spray onto them in order to be edible.
Instead of making everything at one point in the week and warming it up as they go, TTB cooks everything fresh daily and when it’s gone, it’s gone. That might be concerning to some, but realize that any legit place for ‘Q will be like this.
The atmosphere is cozy with plenty of room at the bar and enough TVs to catch the game or keep the little ones occupied. TTB is kept extremely clean both in and out of the kitchen. Yes, I did see it in its entirety thanks to owner Chip who gave me the grand tour.
So, nice place, right? “But wait! How’s the food?!” You’ve got some attitude, buddy. The good news is your patience is well-rewarded at TTB. The first thing I was served up was their now-famous Texas Tumbleweeds. A hushpuppy variant, these lovely little balls of potato, cheese and bacon are a great way to start your meal.
I was in luck as today, they were featuring their burnt ends which isn’t always the case. Be sure to call early if you want in on those because they go FAST. However, the friendly staff will happily keep your food nice and hot for when you stop in.
I opted for a platter that came with ribs, brisket, a side (I chose the baked mac and cheese because…I mean come on, it’s baked mac and cheese) and my drink with an a la carte order of burnt ends. Seriously, folks, this stuff is fall-off-the-bone tender and the burnt ends are honest to goodness the best I’ve ever tasted. I’ve been to Kansas City, I’ve been to St. Louis and they were put to shame by Omaha’s own.
IF your appetite survives past this point, the Hershey’s pie is a perfect rich, creamy capper to your evening. Be sure to say hello to Chip and the gang as they happily take a moment to interact and chat it up with everyone. Great food served by great people. TTB is a new Omaha staple.
Can’t say enough about it!
Normally when I see a restaurant attached to a chain motel, I keep on driving, but this is a spot you should NOT pass up!
