i got the man cave burger with fries and a pop. in the app, there are no customization options for toppings, so in the notes box i wrote something to the tune of “can you please add pickles, it’s my first time trying your food as a birthday gift to myself and i love pickles.” all very true – no good burger is complete without pickles
but BOY, did they deliver. first and foremost, i got not 1, not 2, but 4 big sandwich pickles on my burger – which was absolutely a contributing factor to how incredibly delicious it was. sizeable juicy patty, fresh ingredients in generous portions, and of course, pickles. the fries themselves were very satisfying as well.
that’s not even the best part of my experience with the works. to my surprise, this note (pictured) was on top of my food when my order was delivered, with the coupon to follow suit. i have to say, i love that they include a note of who’s put my order together so i know who to properly thank. ryan, i am so grateful for your generosity and kindness. especially now after trying your burgers and knowing they’re definitely worth the hype, this was such a thoughtful gesture and a wonderfully unexpected birthday gift that proved that your food isn’t the only thing at the works deserving of some positive attention. clearly this place genuinely cares about their customers, and it’s pretty safe to say i’ll be visiting again and recommending to all my friends!! thank you so much again!
TL;DR of l@st post: i ordered the works for the first time almost 2 months ago for my birthday via uber eats, got the man cave burger, really wanted pickles, begged for them in the special notes section cause it was my birthday, got a bunch of pickles but got a free meal coupon from the birthday pickle fairy that is Ryan. it was amazing.
flash forward to today, and i finally came to the works in person for the first time to use my birthday coupon. my dads in town from NFLD, and since he was always the one trying to convince me to try the works, i brought him along.
we both got the tragically maple, and it was incredible. bottomless fries are pretty cool (and delicious) too, but i only ate half my plate and he barely finished his. i didn’t even finish my burger. the stuff is DELICIOUS, but it is filling – don’t be overconfident like me and think you can finish it. you can’t. you shouldn’t. get a box. save yourself. there is no self control when the food tastes this good.
our server was awesome. after we ordered he offered us the bacon garlic aioli to dip our fries in, and we immediately took him up on it, and man, i would buy that stuff by the gallon if i could. he circles back before our food is ready to offer a different sauce, but we say no, until he informs us that their sauces are in fact ALSO bottomless, so i joke “ah! bring us one of each!”, but suddenly our food is ready, and bring us one of each sauce he did. he sat there telling us which was which, and here’s my ranking:
1. bacon garlic aioli
2. the beechhouse
3. W sauce
4. chipotle mayo
5. hotter than hell (incredibly tasty, i’m just not big on spicy)
6. sweet and tangy
but honestly you can’t go wrong regardless, they’re all great. try them all. they’re bottomless!
for dessert we got the biscoff cheesecake. this was our big mistake. because that stuff is so, beyond, INCREDIBLE. you can’t put it down. by this point we were already stuffed, but wasting a dessert that good just felt like a damn shame.
now we’re finally getting to the bill, and i’m already well past the point of planning to leave another great review of our server. i pass off the coupon, and as i’m telling him the story of getting it (ordered for the first time on uber, and mentioned it was my birthday…) he goes, “WAIT. let me guess. pickles?” IT WAS RYAN. OUR SERVER WAS THE BIRTHDAY PICKLE FAIRY. i was in shock, but also not really, because he had just spent our whole meal proving how awesome i already thought he was for the whole birthday situation. but he even remembered my name.
ryan, my dude, this one is for you. you’re fricking amazing and i have to give credit where credit is due. it’s so obvious how much work you put in for this place, how much you care about the restaurant and its customers, you’re truly one of a kind. you embody the spirit of the works. you make this place what it is. it is worth visiting, not just for the great food, but because of you. never change, because you are the heart of this place, and the reason i’m going to recommend it to everyone i know.
and to anyone reading this – go here. go here just to meet ryan, for all i care, because it would be a worthwhile trip. but i strongly suggest trying their food while you’re at it. i’m sitting here at home now, belly full, knowing that between my dad and i we tipped this guy over 50% of our bill, and i wish we tipped him more. i added 15% to our joint bill when i paid, but after we left, my dad insisted i run back in to give him another cash tip because of how genuinely wonderful this guy is, and you know what? Ryan tried to refuse it. because in his words, he doesn’t do this for the money. that’s the kind of guy Ryan is. and that’s why the works should be your go-to place.
thank you ryan. my dad & i don’t get to go out often being in different provinces, but you made it extra special❤️ you’re amazing!
The restaurant was packed which was refreshing considering last time we went there were barely any tables filled.
The menu looked new and refreshed with a sleek look including pictures and a smaller menu that isn’t as complicated.
When the food came out we were so excited. The fries were cooked to perfection and fresh. Our burgers were absolutely delicious and fresh. We had the burgers with bacon jam and candied bacon .. wow.. so yummy. We also noticed that instead of the food being served on a silver tray it was served on a sleek black plate. Much nicer!
All in all a delicious meal and we will definitely be coming back to our old favourite spot, The Works!
