The place was hopping at lunchtime! Staff were friendly, efficient, and got the meals out quickly. I had the bbq chicken melt, delicious! Family had meals and they were equally good.
Such a great downtown spot with a great vibe.

WOW! This place was recommended to me as a bagel place and The Works Café is MUCH more than just bagels! First off, there is plenty of seating so you don’t have to worry about that. When you stand at the register to order you can’t see the far end of the menu, that’s how much they have! From sandwiches to smoothies, they have it all and I have so mucn I’m excited to try. I got myself a sandwich which the cashier was helpful in informing me on what’s good, and I was able to get a hot apple cider, my favorite. The sandwiche was excellent, and all of it was a good price. So far, I’d say this is the best breakfast food available in Durham.

I’ve been eating at The Works as long as I can remember. I’ve seen changes in management, menu, and decor. The food and staff are friendly and efficient. But today my bagel had so little cream cheese on it, I felt compelled to reach out. I still give the place 4 stars but now I’m just hungry and bummed.
Ps I asked for dark toasted! That’s not a mistake

Crazy busy weekend, so I’m not mad that they were busy and backed up. That’s to be expected on very busy weekends at the school. But I am very upset that I was told 30 minutes when I ordered, and then had to wait an hour and 31 minutes to get the sandwiches. They have to be better about estimating wait times! If they told me the wait to was over an hour, I would have thanked them politely, and found someplace else to eat.

Somehow they’ve never been able to find a decently fresh avocado to put on any of my sandwiches or bagels. If I’m paying an extra $1.50 for it, i expect it to be green, not the color of dog poop. Lots of people have had the same experience.

The Works in Durham offers efficient service that caters to the needs of the bustling college town, earning it a solid three-star rating. The fast service is a big plus, making it an ideal spot for students and locals on the go.
During our visit, we tried the Sunrise Special grilled burrito, boasting local cage-free eggs, organic quinoa, avocado, naturally-cured no nitrate/nitrite bacon, sweet potato, VT cheddar, and pico de gallo. We also sampled the mozzarella sandwich. While the food was satisfactory, the flavors didn’t quite hit the mark; they were decent but not exceptional.
Overall, The Works provides a convenient dining option in Durham, but it falls just short of being a standout culinary experience.

GM Matt and his team are always fantastic and accommodating. I work for the Uni and The Works is our go-to lunch spot since it’s so easy to order and pick it up from them. If you’re placing a larger order, you can shoot them an email and they’ll even write people’s names on each package so you don’t have to play the guessing game when distributing food. The day-old rack also offers a great deal on bagels and treats. Don’t forget to sign up for the Rewards program so you can rack up points and snag some freebies.

Look, normally I love this place. I came here in college all the time and would study while sipping on a coffee and having lunch. However, the last three times I’ve ordered here they have royally screwed up my order. All three times my order has been missing an item completely, or it was mixed up with someone else’s order, or a bunch of ingredients were missing. Mostly this seems to happen through online orders and not in-person ordering. But I have to ask…who forgets the egg on an egg and cheese sandwich? I waited over an hour for a completely incorrect order.
When I called to see if I could remedy the situation, I just wanted to get the correct order because I love the food here. The lady on the phone was incredibly rude and defensive right off the bat. I understand it was through DoorDash and they had limited options to help me, but the way she spoke to me was so unhelpful and condescending it was astounding. I had already contacted DoorDash and they couldn’t help me so I figured I would call the actual restaurant to see if they could do anything for me. Apparently I was mistaken in thinking the restaurant that made my food could help me. Not once did I speak with a manager, and nobody even inquired to ask me what the problem was they just jumped straight into, “we can’t help you.”
I’ve worked in customer service my whole life (even managed full-service restaurants before) and I have never given a negative review before because I KNOW how difficult the job is, but this was the last straw for me. Three completely wrong orders and rude employees is enough. I will not be returning to the Works anymore. I really hope management can train staff to handle situations like these with a more professional attitude. I also hope they start checking the food before it goes out to customers or DoorDash drivers. I am left hungry and so disappointed by this whole experience.
Food ordered: toasted egg and cheese on a works bagel with sprouts, avocado, tomato and cheddar cheese.
Food received: Untoasted bagel with cold cheese, and minuscule amount of sprouts. No egg (!?), no tomatoes, no avocado. See picture below.

My partner and I ordered some food from this place through door dash and were very disappointed in the quality of the food. Not only was the bacon completely black and burnt, we found a full on dead moth in the quinoa bowl. We are grossed out and bummed, we get food here often and won’t be doing so anymore. The manager is refunding us but was rude and curt on the phone, although the boy who answered the phone was very kind.
