If you are looking for a meal that captures the true soul of Crested Butte, look no further than the Wooden Nickel. As the oldest saloon in town, it manages to strike that rare balance between a historic and unpretentious local hangout and a high end steakhouse. We recently grabbed two seats at the bar, which is easily the best way to experience the place. You get to soak in the Old West atmosphere, complete with dark wood, vintage memorabilia, and a warm, lively energy that makes you feel like a local before your first drink even arrives.
We ordered the French Dip and the Tenderloin, and neither disappointed. The French Dip is legendary for a reason. The prime rib is shaved thin, incredibly tender, and served on a fresh roll with a side of au jus that has a rich, savory depth you just do not find at your average pub. It is a massive and comforting portion that pairs perfectly with a cold beer. On the other hand, the tenderloin was a masterclass in preparation. It was expertly seared and remarkably juicy. While the Nickel is famous for its beef, their elk tenderloin is also a standout if you are looking for a mountain town twist.
Whether you are coming off the slopes or just looking for a solid dinner, the service at the bar is attentive and friendly, adding to the welcoming vibe. It is not just a meal; it is a piece of Crested Butte history that still delivers on quality.

We ate almost everywhere in town and bang for the buck this is your spot for lunch and dinner. Amazing food at a reasonable price point, Amazing staff, great chill vibes.
Honestly enjoyed thier elk and prime rib was 2x better at a better price point than next door. Your choice but for our experience…it’s just better here.
Annndddd…..the bison chilli….chef’s kiss!
Got the bison chilli 2 days ago and decided to stop on our way out of town for a going away bowl for the road. Definitely will be our go to next season when we return.

This is my medium well burger. Great I came in at the end of the night and apparently they were too concerned on getting my food out before it was cooked. Great tasting food but this is unacceptable

Best meal of my life. Had the prime rib on special. It was perfectly cooked and had this ridiculously good pepper bark crust that may be the best I’ve ever had anywhere. We also got a bison steak which was equally amazing. Never had bison, so can’t make a fair comparison, but I’d go back for it. My wife got a French dip and my kids split a burger with onion rings and waffle fries. We all sampled some of everything and literally nothing was a let down. The only down side, if I was forced to give one, is the cost of such a meal. 3 adults and 2 kids had a $230 ticket. We did order some of the more expensive items though. 10 out of 10 would recommend for anyone that doesn’t mind spending the money.

Amazing burger and hazy IPA!
We’ve been coming to CB for a few years now and have only had drinks here. We stopped by for lunch and ordered the burger and fries, and the turkey sandwich with chips with the local CB IPA. Everything came out promptly and delicious, but the burger especially was top notch. One thing to note: I did ask for no onions but it came out with a comically large amount of onions on it so if you have allergies, please emphasize any food restrictions. As my food allergies aren’t severe I just took them off and enjoyed everything else. There is a kitchen service fee of 6% which isn’t disclosed on the menu, so take that into consideration with the overall cost. Would definitely recommend!!

I recently dined at your restaurant and wanted to express my gratitude for the exceptional service I received. From the moment we walked in, the staff was incredibly welcoming and accommodating. The food was delicious and arrived perfectly prepared.
However, I did notice a few additional HIDDEN charges on the bill, such as the kitchen fee and the large party fee. While I understand the need to cover costs, I believe that paying your servers what they deserve should eliminate the necessity for these extra charges on your patrons.
Keep in mind there is no AC – so if you’re visiting in the summer months, be prepared to bring a small fan or dress appropriately.
Despite this, I would still highly recommend dining at your restaurant due to the overall wonderful experience.

I had plenty of time to pass in Crested Butte, and I’m so glad I walked into the Wooden Nickel. I ended up spending a few hours there, and the staff couldn’t have been more welcoming. They even let me hang out while they were closing since I was waiting on a ride. It was truly the best hospitality I’ve ever experienced. Dinner was outstanding, and the drinks were just as impressive.

This is one of the best restaurants I have been to in a long time. I travel for work so I have been to a bunch of different restaurants!! The food took a little while, but their was a party of ten right before us so that’s probably why, but the prime rib was almost 2 inches thick and was absolutely phenomenal!! I recommend this place 100%!! It is a little pricey but the food and service make up for all of that!! If I am ever here working in this town again, I will definitely be back!! Thank you Sam (I believe that’s our servers name), and staff for the wonderful experience!!

The family went for dinner over the holiday. The hostess was friendly as can be. As were the bartenders and server. On a cold snowy night in Crested Butte the place was a comfortable/cozy reprieve. It’s a warm place with history. The family had the escargot, mussels, soups, salads and elk. It was all delicious. Enjoy a nice meal in this special place.

Had an amazing experience dining here, had a reservation at a different place and stopped by here and decided to stay because of the atmosphere and our wonderful server, Amanda. She was knowledgeable on her wines and cocktails as well as the menu. I have been in the service industry for years and this woman is top of the line with her style of service. Personable yet professional but made us feel right at home while giving us amazing food and drinks. Her steps of service are also incredible and seeing how she also speaks with other tables and every experience is very personalized to those she’s serving. 10000/10 service, would come back for her and the Flat Iron steak!
