Coming in the staff were friendly. Food came out quick and the quality was superb. The cooks definitely pay close attention to detail as the presentation was very appealing. Windows also offer a nice view. Saw a sign saying “best crab cakes” and lives up to its’ name! Other places fill their crab cakes with flour and theirs is straight up crab. Great experience over all!

Hit The Wellwood last night for the 1st time. A quaint Victorian era plantation house on the Chesapeake executing a tantalizing menu of land and sea treasures. The cocktail list is an exuberant display of liquid innovation with a monstrous list of fresh crushes and mules to choose.
Our jumbo lump hot crab dip served in a freshly baked ciabatta loaf was stellar with its crispy exterior jam packed and overflowing with a creamy lumped dream. The Rockfish topped with crab imperial was caught fresh that morning and the texture proved it on every bite.
Do not pass on the fried green tomatoes topped with hot crab, sweet corn and tomato salsa it’s an explosion of Summertime on the plate and palate. The Filet Mignon prepared medium rare had a seared exterior and perfect pink to deep red center that melted in my mouth. The surf and turf combination was cautiously washed down with a glass of Caymus Conundrum that cascaded a blissful land and sea fusion.
Top off the evening with a slab of their homemade Key Lime pie for the victory. You won’t find anything better in most of the Keys.
We will be visiting again as the first time was super enjoyable. They offer steamed crabs yearly, and outside dining options for those magical evenings.
Ask for Jordan, he is a Champion server and Bonita the manager is warm and Accommodating. She also can give you a history lesson on the estate!.

I really loved the fried chicken and cornbread. Outstanding flavor and breaded just right. But the shrimp salad sandwich was very ordinary and lacked any semblance of Chesapeake Bay flavor. The Smith Island cake was a bit disappointing as it was strawberry and not chocolate, so just not my thing. Service was outstanding, though, and the building is old and very charming. I would definitely come back to try something else if ever again in the area.

It has been a while since coming down to the Wellwood. Excellent atmosphere and interesting conversation with staff and also some other customers. We went there today after church and the food is always great. I love the fried chicken. I did get the oyster stew, which is new to the menu and I feel if they lost the garlic it would be so much better. Bryce was our server and he was amazing. Checked a few times making sure all was good. He’s great at his job. Will definitely be back

Keep in mind this is their off season. Food was okay and service could have been better. The place was hopping. We went on a Sunday and they are closed Monday and Tuesday, the waiter said they try to use everything up on Sundays so it’s not sitting around Monday and Tuesday. I’d imagine the food is much better Wed-Sat. Our bread basket was sad. We got the fried chicken-it was pretty good. The crab bisque had no lumps of crab. The crab dip was pretty good and there was a lot of it in the bread bowl. Shepherds pie was okay-we were expecting more veggies in it, it was just ground beef and lamb in a sauce under mashed potatoes. The shipwreck drink was pretty good and came very quickly.

The Wellwood has a wonderful local charm. In history, in ambiance, in personality. Definitely a solid local go to restaurant for good food, service, spirits (and music – outdoors in good weather). Definitely a place to try or add to one of your dining choices when in the area. They are also known for their steamed crabs.
Reservations highly recommended- it gets very crowded especially in the summer.

This was my first time here and all.I can say is AMAZING! The staff was extremely nice and attentive. The interior.had an old school vibe with dark wood. The food was very delicious. I had the swordfish and my wife had the beef wellington. Both had a buttery melt in your mouth texture. I will return. I highly recommend.

This is our second visit to Wellwood. A unique experience separated into a formal or casual atmosphere, all in one building. As we entered we were greeted by a pleasant young man and a manager. We were seated promptly with drinks served right away. Weather formal or casual, the food is prepared the same. Delicious!
I ordered the sour dough chicken strips with French fries and the BEST tasting French onion soup I’ve ever had! Another in our party had a seafood platter, the third was scalloped Parmesan and the fourth, chicken Parmesan scaloppini. French fries with a veggie side dish. Our order was taken quickly and we didn’t have to wait long for our food to be served. Even though there were many people their service was fast and cooked perfectly.
Once we received our food, the manager came by to ask if everything looked good, if we needed anything. Our drinks were kept full as well. After a minute the manager stopped by to see if the food was to our liking. He was very sincere. We were treated like we were some of the most important guests attending that evening.
There was so much food! We did our best to finish everything but were unable. The manager stopped by a third time to ask if we were satisfied with our meals. We assured him we were very pleased.
If you are ever in this area, I highly recommend you visit Wellwood restaurant. Some items are pricy, others were very reasonable. They also offer tee shirts, hats and other souvenir items to remember your enjoyable dining experience. Yes, we will be back.
