Everything was really delicious. The oysters were awesome
I wish the bread was warm but it was very fresh. The cabbage was great too as were the scallops. The 22% service charge helps to provide staff with sustainable wages and benefits which is always cool

I would return

The oyster tasted fresh, but not worth 5 dollars a pop plus 22% service fee.
The biggest disappointment for me was the steak tartare where the crisp tastes like the ones from trail mix 🙁
The fried oysters was okay but the guac dip was a good job!
Atmosphere is nice and well lit.

This has been on my list forever to try and I’m so glad I did! Came as a solo diner and seated at the bar. Very comfortable and quick service. All the food was delicious: had raw oysters, friend oysters, and clams. Will be coming back.

Expensive dishes plus 22% service charge. Dinner here would easily cost $100 per person. Tapa style dishes costs $20-$30 per dish and oysters cost $5 each.

An obvious Seattle favorite for the last 10 plus years, this place does not disappoint! With indoor and outdoor seating this lovely joint in Old Ballard finds itself nestled within a total experience space. In the basement is a private event area for events, and on the street side is Staple and Fancy serving as an Italian eatery and bar. This building is a one stop shop for drinks, events, and fantastic seafood and Italian. The Walrus and Carpenter itself has excellent service staff that can walk you through and needs or wants. The food itself is impeccable, with a choice selection of local Washington oysters and other mains such as the Plum Salad, Billy’s Tomatoes, Scallop Crudo, and Hama Hama Clams. All of which we had and enjoyed immensely. The drink menu also has many choice options such as the Burbank and Marvin’s Garden which are all fantastic. Highly recommended seafood place- but you already know this as The Walrus and Carpenter is one of the best places in Seattle for seafood.
Doors open at 4pm, and the line starts at 3:45-3:50. No reservations, walk ins only. If there’s no room inside at tables, there’s also a bar that can accommodate.

TLDR: Yes, it’s not a value meal, but the prices are not out of step compared to similar fare in Seattle. They add a 22% service charge and no addl’ gratuities are expected. Everything was delicious and of excellent quality. I will be coming back!

Given some of the less-than-glowing reviews, I came to try this place with some apprehension… and ended up being very pleasantly surprised.
The food was exquisite. Fresh and varied array of oysters, a bright and tasty crudo, and the grilled sardines were to die for. If you are a solo diner, they are able to offer half portions.
Staff was very friendly and informative. They squeezed in an addl’ order for us 15 minutes before closing time (they came and asked if I wanted anything). (Caveat: I came on a relatively quiet Sunday evening… the place is small ish and I can see how you could wait a bit for a table on a busier day).
They add a 22% service charge on top of the value of food ordered. Gratuities beyond that not expected.

Everything was top notch during our visit with friends to The Walrus and the Carpenter. First off the oysters were outstanding – fresh, clean, and perfectly shucked. The other dishes we ordered were all excellent, from the beef, to the bread, and the deviled eggs. Service was solid during our dinner and the drinks were quite tasty as well. Definitely plan to be back next time we’re in Ballard!

This place is a great spot for oysters and small plates, and it really lives up to its reputation. The oyster selection was fresh and well curated. The bread and butter alone was worth ordering. I loved the crab roll and pickled vegetables, though a couple dishes felt a bit pricey for the portion. The space is cozy and lively, but it can get loud and cramped during peak hours.
It’s a place I return to for quality seafood, even if it’s not a perfect experience every time.

Oysters, Oysters and more Oysters. That’s what my friend and I wanted and that’s what we got!! Absolutely enjoyed our experience here with fantastic, fresh oysters, a hip vibe and knowledgeable staff. We sat at the bar and had an awesome view of the oyster shucking, our server brought us a great white wine to complement our meal, and the oysters were outstanding.
Love that it’s first come first serve, no reservations, a smaller but well utilized space and great staff!!

I can’t tell if it’s food poisoning or just disappointment. Who is this restaurant even for? I spent $120 without drinks and left feeling starving. I’ve been to Michelin star restaurants with better portions and cheaper prices. What’s the point of this? The flavor is good, but I would only be happy with this place if each dish was half as much money, double the portion and I could order double what I ordered in order to actually leave with any level of satisfaction. I do not recommend this place and will not be back. There are plenty of oyster bars with better value that are good quality. Also, please clean the bathroom. Why does it smell like old urine at 4pm? You guys open at 4pm. It shouldn’t smell! $30 a (small) plate and you can’t clean your bathroom?
