The Virginian Restaurant at the Occidental Hotel is named after Owen Wister’s immortal novel The Virginian. and since the novel is a famous and wonderful story of the Old West, it is only fitting that The Virginian Restaurant is a famous place for you to find wonderful food in an authentic Old West setting. The Virginian used to be one of my favorite restaurants. I come once a year to vacation in Wyoming all the way from Missouri. I always look forward to eating here. Unfortunately this year I learned that The Virginian was under new management and you can definitely tell. My favorite item on the menu is the truffle Mac N’ Cheese and prime rib. The new menu no longer has the truffle Mac n’ cheese. Instead you get the choice of instant mashed potatoes, baked potato or rice. My prime rib was tough and seemed small. The cheesecake was the only good thing. Oh and who charges for rolls!? My family unfortunately wasted over $240. We will not be back.

Excellent service!!! They serve your dinner as it’s supposed to be – bringing appetizers, bread, and entrees in order and allowing good 30 minutes in between, so you can talk. Allow for 2 hours to really enjoy this amazing dinner experience. Food is great, elk steak is to die for!

Never seen such basically unfriendly service (ladies). At the beginning we thought whether they had „smoked something“. Any politeness we saw so far in the US was absent or at least could be perceived in this way. Later it got a bit better with one of the two, but the second was still and basically unfriendly. One service clerk, serving bread, walked around with a face if he is beaten every minute. Sad for the good food and nice room (not the saloon). But for sure we would / will not go in there again. I can spend my money simply better than there

We had a reservation for 12 of us and the table was set and we were sat right when we got there. They had a very limited menu of 3 appetizers (one was out), 3 entrees and 3 desserts. They did allow us to order from the bar menu as we had three children with us and that menu had a lot more options. The ones that ordered from that menu had their food about 20 minutes before the rest of us. Four of us got the fettuccine Alfredo which was hot but boring. Four of us got the prime rib which three came out warm ish but one was barely warm with a cold baked potato. They seemed annoyed when asked to heat that plate of food up but it came back out five minutes later warmed. But they never cleared her plate until asked after the desserts had come out. The desserts were good especially the cheesecake with the strawberry sauce. We’ve been to the restaurant before and had great experiences but this time was not good and unless they get their stuff together we won’t be back.

1. Wanted to eat at the Saloon, called for reservations and was told 5:45 would be great “IN THE SALOON”. Got there and was told only “fine” dining area was open to reservations. Fine we will eat at the Virginian. Service/Hostess/ Manager were in total disarray. Got seated and ordered beverages. After some time, drinks were ordered and apps and salads were ordered, 1 diner only wanted an entree. This threw the server for a loop, but with patience it was worked out. The salads were grilled romaine with mayonnaise and Parmesan cheese, (Caesar Salad), no garlic, anchovies or salt & pepper. The Elk “medallions” were stewed in butter and olive oil, certainly not “flash fried”. I ate half my salad and 1 of the elk medallions. The rest of my meal went back untouched. The potstickers were dry and under cooked, inedible. 3rd diner tried the same thing as me with similar effect. Finally the scallops, meh. The “peace de resistance” was when after 20+ minutes we finally got our check, which we were willing to pay for, so we could quietly leave. But alas, the manager sarcastically asked if there was a problem she could address. I politely said no, we just wanted our check, so we could pay it leave a tip and go. The manager pushed the issue again rudely at which time I informed the manager that the food was horrible and the service was lacking at best. The manager then attempted to engage my wife. My wife was told never to come back and that we were terrible guests and ate all of the food that was presented to our table. First time for everything, go north there are plenty of reputable and reasonable restaurants. Happy travels

Great service, limited menu. Food was good, however we came in an hour after the restaurant opened for the elk tenderloin, but it was already sold out. Wasn’t very busy so we were disappointed they ran out so fast.

Outstanding food. Portions are medium–you won’t leave stuffed or with food on the table, but you won’t go hungry either. Everything I ordered was flavorful and perfectly cooked. On top of it, the new owner(since 2019) and servers were absolutely wonderful.

PHENOMENAL food, attentive service and an even better venue. I will warn anyone that they menu prices (and the menu itself) are out of date. Most of the meat cuts are “market price” and prices are not listed. Generally in line with surrounding competition – but never enjoy a menu without prices.. The Steak Marsala though? The best I’ve ever had. Will definitely return on trips to Buffalo.
