We had a wonderful lunch at The Tavern in Old Salem. The meatloaf was outstanding, rich and flavorful with a delicious glaze, and the sides were just as comforting and well prepared. You can tell the kitchen knows how to execute classic dishes beautifully.
The restaurant was quite busy, so the service felt a bit hurried at times, but the staff was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. The ambiance truly makes the experience, with its historic charm, warm wood floors, and cozy dining rooms that transport you back in time.
One note for those specifically seeking a traditional Moravian menu: it’s currently limited, with the pork being the primary Moravian option available. Overall, though, we really enjoyed the food and atmosphere and would happily return.

We were very excited to go there for lunch yesterday. As soon as we entered, a very unfriendly young woman approached us and told us that they weren’t serving any of the Moravian dishes on the menu. It was as if she were hoping we would turn around and leave. We were still willing to try out the place, so we simply said that was ok. We were seated in the front room. It appears that they are using the furniture from the old tavern, which we find to be quite pleasant and helps to set the tone. The young woman returned to take our drink orders, and again, she was just remarkably unpleasant. We took a few minutes to peruse the menu, which has many enticing soul food choices. I ordered the meatloaf, yams, and cornbread dressing. Our daughter ordered the fried chicken with fries and fried okra and my husband ordered the stewed oxtails over rice, collard greens, and green beans. The food arrived in 15-20 minutes and every bit of it, with the exception of the French fries, was absolutely delicious. We will definitely return; however, hopefully, we’ll get another server or hope that the other one will have a positive and pleasant attitude next time. It truly felt as if we were offending her by being there.

Granted this is the first week since they reopened, but… they did not have any of the stated Moravian offerings.
The steak and gravy was tasteless and cold! The shrimp po boy was light on shrimp and had a sweet remoulade sauce. It was ok-ish but not worth what I paid for it. It took a very long time to get our food even though we were one of the first guests, and my husband didn’t get one of his sides until we were ready to leave.
I’m gonna wait a month for them to work out what I hope are just opening kinks. But I’ll read the most current reviews beforehand.

I love soul food! And I absolutely love the restaurant coming in behind the original Tavern. However, I have to say, I’m sad that a niche restaurant like this has followed a wonderful restaurant that had universal appeal. I would have hoped that something similar would have replaced it, as opposed to a restaurant (of any sort) that lacks broad appeal.

My husband and I ordered delicious salads. The kids had the chicken bbq flat bread. Everything from the food to the drinks was perfect. Well seasoned with fresh ingredients. Loved the sangria too. The staff was very friendly.

I got the Pot Roast, my husband got their Chicken Livers, both were served with mashed potatoes and green beans. Simply delicious. Chocolate Burbon Pecan pie topped my meal off and my husband ordered Fresh Apple cake both were amazing. The service was excellent. They also brought a basket of muffins. So take a afternoon walk around Old Salem then eat at the Tavern you will not be disappointed!

Multiple food replacements without asking. About an hour wait for a pretty basic breakfast. I rarely leave reviews, but pass on this place if you want good food or service.

Accommodating and conversational staff. We arrived 45 minutes before lunch ended without a reservation, but they seated us immediately. It was the second day they reopened after the holidays (they close for about a month) and were very busy; however, there wasn’t a long wait for our food.

The waitress shared about the history of the area and recommended things to do in both Old Salem and downtown. We followed her recommendations and had a great time!

They recommend reservations for all meals. I tried calling during lunch and no one picked up the phone, so I would say to call beforehand. Again, just stopping in worked for us.

We will probably return to try more food! What we had was delicious and decently priced for lunch. I would like to try the quality of the more-expensive dinner plates.

A meal at The Tavern is an experience. Since it’s located in Old Salem, it’s like stepping back into the past. The waitstaff are dressed in period costumes. The decor is simple and rustic. The food is delicious. Be sure to make a reservation since it gets busy.

Good menu-I wish we could have tried more. The desserts looked and sounded amazing. The fried okra was very good and the pretzel was tasty (watch out for the horseradish in the mustard sauce!)
Decor and wait staff are according to the old time period (early 1900s?). Reasonable pricing and convenient when seeing Old Salem. Parking available on the street or visitor center.
