After Iowa River Power closed, we were looking for a new favorite fine dining restaurant for special occasions. This place is priced like fine dining, but just doesn’t offer a fine dining experience in food, service, and overall experience.
Starting with what they did well: you do get plenty of food, the overall ambience is quiet and relaxed, and the ribeye was perfect. Between that and the cocktails, they were the only things we ordered that we felt was worth the price paid.
What wasn’t great: the stuffed mushrooms were soggy and bland. The bread was bland. The Parmesan peppercorn ranch dressing is overpowered by the peppercorn (couldn’t taste anything but that), The loaded baked potato had a pathetic amount of toppings. The service wasn’t outstanding, not absent but not attentive enough. There were plenty of times my glass of water was empty for more than 15 minutes. The prime rib was a bit overcooked, and I’ve definitely had better for the price.
With high prices come high expectations. So when a restaurant doesn’t measure up, it’s all the more disappointing.
5/10

Overall a very weird experience. Not what we were expecting for a “Supper Club”. The atmosphere and vibe to me was just a huge miss. Sad strange banquet room with unlit candles. My menu had old food on it, the table was wobbly. The food was just okay – overpriced for what it was. Had to ask for the bread that comes with the meal and for silverware. Service was slow and not great…especially for there being only 3 other tables there. What is the point of making a note in the reservation if it’s not acknowledged? We came here for my 30th birthday and it was just a sad disappointing experience.

We went to Sunday brunch here. The food wasn’t spectacular for the price we were paying—pretty standard brunch fare. The ambience was just odd in this huge hotel ballroom that was very poorly lit. Our table was in a dark corner and it’s no wonder our server seemed to forget about us. No water refills and we couldn’t find her (or anyone for that matter) to pay our bill. We won’t be back and I unfortunately can’t recommend it to others either.

My first visit to the Supper Club, formerly known as the new IRP, was a mixed bag of experiences. I must commend the excellent service provided by the staff—right from the welcoming host to our attentive waitress, everyone made us feel valued and well taken care of.
The highlight of the morning was undoubtedly the food. Each dish we tried was delicious, maintaining the high standard set by the original location. However, despite these positives, there were some aspects of the dining experience that left much to be desired.
My main critique revolves around the layout of the buffet area. Placing it in a circular arrangement seemed to disrupt the flow for guests, making it less convenient to access. This setup could benefit from a rethinking to enhance the overall dining experience.
Moreover, my disappointment peaked with the utilization of the banquet room. It felt disconnected from the ambiance I expected, resembling more of a wedding reception venue rather than an intimate dining space. The absence of natural light further detracted from the atmosphere, making it feel somewhat uncomfortable.
A suggestion for improvement would be to reconsider the use of the banquet room altogether. Instead, utilizing the space near the front bar clearing out the couches temporarily for brunch and adding the dining tables with the ample natural light would greatly enhance the dining experience. This area presents a more aesthetically pleasing option, coupled with the convenience of having a bar to enjoy a pre-dinner drink while waiting for a table.
While I understand that every establishment may encounter minor hiccups, the issues surrounding the banquet room and lack of natural light significantly impacted our enjoyment. Regrettably, these factors may deter us from returning anytime soon.
In conclusion, while the Supper Club offers commendable service and delicious food, there remains room for improvement in terms of spatial layout and ambiance. Addressing these concerns could elevate the overall dining experience and encourage guests to return more frequently.

Run away, the food is over-priced and poor quality. My wife had the Mahi which was overcooked and fishy tasting, I had a ribeye which was about a half inch thick and tough. I used to love that sunken bar in the old days but now you stare at an arcade, zero atmosphere. Do not waste your time or money!

We decided to come here for Easter Sunday brunch because we always went to IRP every year. We had a reservation for 11:30am, and when we walked in the entire place was packed full of people. They told us it would be a 30-45 minute wait before we could be seated. When an hour and 15 mins went by and when we went to complain, the wait staff told us that it would be even longer before we could get in to eat. We told them there were multiple open tables in there, and it didn’t make sense to have us sit out here any longer, so they let us in. They also had apparently lost reservations, as they were writing down peoples names who had made reservations and putting them on the list to be seated. This was VERY surprising as IRP ran like clockwork every time we were there. The food was the same as the old place, and it was good as always. Some of the food was ice cold, as they didn’t have the warmers on below the trays. It also sadly didn’t have the same ambiance as IRP did, with the view of the river and the nice decorum. While the food was good, the wait time and the $32 brunch price per person is why we will not be returning in the future. If they lowered the brunch price back to IRP’s, and got control of reservations, we would reconsider. A real disappointment.

Delicious Tuna salad and burgers. Not your old fashioned supper club!

Worst restaurant food I have had after living 25 years in Iowa City. Servers were okay but under staffed. I saw at least ten people walk out after waiting way too long to be waited on. Obviously poorly managed and being located in what was once a community institution, this restaurant is an embarrassment to our community.

Went for brunch thinking it was going to be the IRP brunch…it was not. They parted ways last summer. It’s basically a step up from a hotel breakfast buffet but the cost is much more. It is in no way a brunch.
