Interior is well thought out and welcoming. I really enjoyed meeting their very chill and friendly pooch.
Coffees were both outstanding and we cannot find enough positive things to say about the banh mi’s, from the toasted rolls to the fillings and pickled veggies.
Now we don’t have to travel into Portland to satisfy our banh mi cravings.
They do sell some sandwiches that are more like the Italian-American-style, such as ham & salami, or the vegetarian options caprese and basil pesto avocado. Today they had banana nut muffins, as well as some ready-to-take sandwiches on croissants, a ham-and-cheese (which I tried and is tasty) and an interesting hot-dog-croissant thing.
Beveragewise, they serve coffee, Vietnamese iced coffee, lattes (including matcha), and hot cocoa, as well as Thai milk tea, with or without flavors and pearls (not to be confused with ermine and pearls). The Vietnamese iced coffee is very refreshing and as is common, on the sweeter side. They have other drinks in a fridge by the counter.
I had been sad to see BenReuben’s Knishery close, and was excited to see the fun Streetwich art appear on the window. I did not know Chayuda before this, but she is very welcoming. I do know Vin from another place, and he is a great guy who cares about his customers (and working very hard at the moment, so get some sleep, Vinnie boy!). He and his wife have put some real TLC into this.
Verbena and BenReuben’s were a dynamic duo for lunch on this street, but Streetwich is off to a great start, with the legendary Verbena still holding down the fort! Graeme and his family were like family in the neighborhood, so it’s reassuring to see that good people are taking over this spot. (At BenReuben’s, you could buy an individual egg, so his dad, the namesake of the place, would joke that they had the best prices in town for a “whole chicken”. Now where are we supposed to find jokes like these?) Of course if you accidentally walk in here and forget where you are, you will be reminded when you see the half-dozen or so different choices for pork in a sandwich!
Where are we, Toto? We’re at Streetwich! The logo, name, and interior here are all very pleasant, and thoughtfully designed. This is not the easiest time of year to start a restaurant, so let’s get these wonderful people and their great business through the winter!
If you’re at Hannaford or Mill Creek (or better yet, Barber Brothers or GoGo Refill!), stop in and check it out. Today it was fast, and there are a few tables for sitting in, but it’s great as a takeout spot.
While a nice addition to the neighborhood, it’s also handy for someone in Portland because it’s right across the bridge, and it’s easier and cheaper to park over here! For that matter, I think it may be one of the closest banh mi places for someone in Cape Elizabeth or Scarborough, so come on over and scope out the Mill Creek shops and pick up a banh mi while you’re at it! I promise that you won’t get harassed by the ominous Portland parking squadron, over there across the bridge! (You’re ticketing people in January? I mean, really guys? Trying to chase away the only two cars on the block?)
And next to open in the area…the Barkery dog bar? Is there anything that Knightville is not going to have?
