We are two non-beef eaters who were in a small town and needed something to eat. Not many places were open in South Fork on a Monday afternoon at 3pm except for pizza and we both like chocolate malts so we tried the South Fork Malt Shoppe. We were thrilled to see that they had green chili and mushroom burgers so we ordered grilled cheese sandwiches and had them add green chilies and mushroom, which they didn’t skimp on. Our grilled cheese was perfectly cooked and had plenty of delicious, well-distributed toppings. It’s making my mouth water thinking about it as I’m writing this review! The chocolate malt was a perfect consistency and they gave us a large, sturdier straw for good sucking. The french fries were perfect and we both enjoyed our meal. They had a diverse menu including cod fish and chips, fish tacos, and Chicken baskets. This would be a great place for meat eaters because they had a good burger selection, and I would definitely bring my kids here. They even had real ice cream tubs that you could get scooped out for cones or sundaes. The place was clean, bathroom was clean, and there were lots of tables inside and also seating outside either open air or under a shade cloth. Staff was veryfriendly. We will definitely stop in again.

We were famished. The food was good. A bit pricey. It was hard to find an open place to eat. We initially came in to try their malts and burger but we only got the burgers and drinks. We were the only ones eating at the time. The cashier was super friendly. They have an eating contest which seemed interesting so I took a picture of the rules. Only two people have done it so far. Maybe next time through we will try the challenge.

The entrance can be a bit aggressive when you first walk in because the cashier is a sharp right when you come in and doesn’t feel like enough space to comfortably take your time to look at the menu. So we hastily ordered.

Got the strawberry wafer sundae based off a review and it didn’t not disappoint. The ice cream was delicious, next time i personally would ask for a little less of the strawberry syrup but none the less it was delicious. They brought our ice cream right out to us on the patio and we enjoyed it in the sun! Would definitely try again!

Pretty tasty burger and fries. I got the cheeseburger no onions and my husband got the green chili burger no onions no tomatoes. Both burgers came with onions and his came with tomatoes. All burgers are burger baskets and come with fries and a drink and all burgers are served dry. All condiments are on the tables. Would I eat here again, definitely so.

Cheeseburger had a very weird taste – almost like water from a garden hose. I’m pretty sure it was freezer burned meat because in tasting the patty alone it was definitely the meat. The malt was good.
Would come back for the icecream, but wouldn’t spend my money on the food again, especially with the burger alone being $12.
Prices went up since their menu 7 months ago, so don’t be fooled!

UPDATE: I’m not shocked at the response from the business as most negative reviews have a comeback response that’s not professional and quite snarky. So the patties aren’t ever frozen…both burgers yesterday still had a very odd and unpleasant taste that I’m sure doesn’t come from fresh broth. Perhaps old broth? SOMETHING was terribly off!
I understand prices increase. I recommend posting a new menu to avoid confusion for the customer, as now you can’t sub your soft drink on your combo order for a shake/malt for an up charge as their menu posted 7 months ago says.
I change my mind on coming back for icecream…I will not return to this establishment simply because of my experience yesterday, owner comment on my review, and in reading the other owner responses to prior negative reviews.

Stopped for lunch and waited the few minutes till they opened. Ten minutes after opening time the “open” sign was still unlit but we walked up and ordered as it was indeed open.
It is a small place on side the road with outdoors seating and no bathrooms though there are public bathrooms in the near town park.
The food was nice; we both ordered cheeseburger baskets and it was all fresh.

This was a motorcycle trip from route 550 to Pueblo, CO.

Location: 4/5: Not to busy of an area, just off route 160. Easy off, easy on. All gravel parking, not conducive to motorcycle parking.

Ambiance: 1/5: Not much of an atmosphere, as all eating is outside under a medium size carport, sitting on old and wobbly picnic tables. No bathroom. Limited seating.

Value for $$: 1/5: For the quality of food, $14 for a cheeseburger was disgraceful, and $12 for tacos was painful.

Service: 5/5: We had an young lady on her first day on the job trying very hard to get our order right. She was kind, sweet, and apologetic for her slow speed and mistakes. Unfortunately, our order still came out wrong, which was fixed with no argument or additional charge.

Cuisine: 0/5: Burgers were well, well done, and cold. After my son’s first bite, I piled on the condiments to compensate for deficits. Honestly, the worst hamburger I have ever had. While my daughter was not excited about the tacos, she also was not put-off by them either. The fries and onion rings were cold!, tasteless!, and a poor excuse for onion rings and fries. Nothing about our meal warranted a second try. ***We did not try the ice cream. Other customers that we talk with said to try the ice cream. Maybe this place is a malt shoppe and not a hamburger or taco shop for a reason.

Recommend: 0/5: We cannot recommended the South Fork Malt Shoppe.

Unfortunately, they no longer have vegetarian options or the variety of burgers that were posted. The gluten free option was a burger with no bun. The food was good and the fries had some good seasoning although there was maybe too much seasoning on the fries. The malts were good. Nice outdoor seating. Parking available for large vehicles.
