We have visited Hilton Head Island twice now, and have loved Salty Dog Cafe both times. The most recent time was with our combined family Christmas on the island. 12 of us embarked from NH, KS, & IA. We had great food, great service, and loved sitting outside for live music and a cold beer. I had a Shrimp PoBoy and it was perfect. I’m pretty picky about PoBoys and it met all the criteria. We will always return her whenever we visit HHI.

I was a bit skeptical that The Salty Dog could live up to the hype, but now I see why it’s on everyone’s list of must visit places when on Hilton Head.
We did have about a 30 minute wait for lunch on a Tuesday, but between the dock & the store, it was easy to kill a little time.
Once seated, you are instantly emersed in that old school dockside vibe. While slightly dated, the decor works & actually gives you confidence you’ve come to the right place for some great seafood. It made me want to dust off the old topsiders & pop my collar (kidding, I would never pop the collar). Service was great, & you almost feel like you’re eating a huge family meal at someone’s house.
If you’re GF, they do have a GF menu, which is very helpful. Thankfully, most seafood is naturally GF, & they do have GF bread for most of the sandwiches.
We started with the chilled peel & eat shrimp. What’s to say really, it’s hard to mess this one up. Others in the group did get the hushpuppies, which they raved about.
I got the lowcountry boil, & man oh man did it shine! The Old Bay butter was almost magical, and it was boiled to perfection. I’m usually not a fan of the more soggy corn that you get with a boil, but the corn was absolutely covered with that seasoned butter, which was quite delicious. The potatoes were yummy & the sausage & shrimp were fantastic. I would go back for the boil in a heartbeat!
The shrimp salad (GF) got a good review, but the tacos were a bit of a mixed bag. My wife thought the contents of the taco were delicious, but was not a fan of the soft corn shell.
We were there for lunch, but would go for dinner any time. While it was on the cooler side during our visit, I bet the outdoor seating area is a lot of fun on a nice warm afternoon.
Would 100% recommend.

The service was fantastic. The food was great quality – although we both thought the steamed veggies might have been from frozen. The heat and the sun were harsh. If the umbrella had an adjustable pole we may have been able to put some shade where we needed it. This took a bit out of the whole experience; but it was worth it.

Grabbed some takeout for lunch! I got their Lowcountry Mac & cheese and if you’re looking for a unique seafood dish this would be it! The perfect combo of Gouda and Mac and cheese and seafood- so so yummy! We shopped in the gift shop and then grabbed our takeout which gave us the perfect amount of time to shop and grab what we wanted! The food was ready pretty quickly and the staff were all so nice! Wish we had gotten to eat outside there because it was so nice and pretty! Can’t wait to visit again!

We stopped in this morning for breakfast. We were promptly seated and our server was there in a flash. The menu was straight forward with multiple options that sounded appetizing. Our food arrived very quickly and everything was nice and fresh. Both dishes were good, but not great. Nothing I would ever complain over though. And the view is amazing as expected. We had the shrimp and grits as well as the dog bowl special (country potatoes topped with scrambled eggs, cheese, and hollandaise sauce)

Amazing service (ask for Paula)! Good food and even better atmosphere. Our party of 10 had about a 30 min wait, there were plenty of food and drink options to choose from. We sat on the patio / deck and enjoyed the atmosphere of the water and people.

I can now see why people are obsessed with The Salty Dog. I mean after 5 generations of Jake the black lab how could you not. I was looking for some great seafood and The Salty Dog Cafe delivered. I had the Fisherman’s pasta with huge chunks of crab shrimp and lobster in a rich creamy sauce. Very good indeed. My mother had the shrimp and grits, didn’t even let me get a taste she devoured it. My wife had Jake-zilla burger, what was she thinking? This burger had a monster size patty, BBQ meat with a pickle spear and hush puppy to top it off. She couldn’t finish it. And my son just wanted a bacon cheese burger and fries. No problem for the kitchen staff. To top of the feeding frenzy they had live music. Great classy restaurant with an even better cult like follow. If you haven’t been you have to give it a try and stay salty my friends.

This is a lovely place to go to in good weather when you can sit outside. Nice views and often live music. The bar is fun. However, the food is not special at all for the price charged and the service is dependent on the server you get. Currently the whole area is being renovated so it’s a bit of a construction zone. If we return it will be for drinks only but we will have dinner elsewhere.
