Visited this restaurant for Valentine’s Day. We did the prefix menu where we loved almost everything we tasted.
The house was busy and running late, so we were standing in a tight but cute hallway with 10-15 minutes to wait for our table. Once we got seated, Josh our server was great! We had the miso cod (8/10), onigiri(9/10), chirashi bowl(10/10), grilled chicken(10/10), and earl grey cake (5/10) for desert. Nice restaurant, wish the lights were dimmed to set a romantic mood to match the whole vibe, but would visit again.

Great vibes, the place was so aesthetic!! Would be a perfect date spot. The bathroom was giving speakeasy lol – behind a moving bookcase. They got my friend’s order wrong tho, so we had to wait a little bit longer, but they were really nice about it. Food wise, it was yummy but not sure if I would go back again since it’s out of the way in Brooklyn

– Shiro bowl (standard) ($36): 8/10, pretty fresh fish, but I didn’t think this was as good as other places I’ve been to, like Tora in Boston. Rice to fish ratio is lowkey off. The hamachi was REALLY good tho!!
– Hitsumabushu eel set ($32): 9/10, the eel was so flavorful and tender
– Matcha tiramisu ($15): 6/10, just okay

The parcels of mr moto is so fun! They wrap the boxes in paper and add a little card, like you’re actually receiving a personal parcel from mr moto 😉 Dining in would be an experience but getting a delivery was equally a delight. I’ll pay his residence and office a visit next time.

I was at the Japanese restaurant for brunch a while back with two others. The service was friendly, and the place inside is a bit quirky with an interesting, albeit fake, aesthetic. The drink menu looked interesting, including a nice sake and cocktail selection, but I wasn’t interested that day.

Before we got our main dishes, someone ordered the Shishito Peppers/ひややこ, or seared sweet soy shishito peppers in dashi for $8. It was a bit more justified for the price point compared to the usual shishito, as the dashi and bonito flakes on top added a nice umami, salty, and sweet flavor. This was a nice light starter.

For mains, we all got one of their Teishoku sets/定食, or set menus. The sets come with six dishes, along with your choice of entree, which varies in price. My favorite of the bunch was the Kamo, or duck with house mustard blend, which had a nice smokiness and a good soft texture. My second favorite was the ohitashi, or seasoned spinach and mushrooms, which was refreshing, with a light, pleasant sweetness. The miso soup was tiny but nicely made in terms of the broth, though I wouldn’t have minded a bit more vegetables and tofu. The tsukemono, or pickled vegetables, was a good mix of takuan, or daikon, and a purple pickle, which I believe was made from cucumber. The Uzaku, or grilled eel over seasoned cucumber, was fine but much lighter flavored than I expected, and the eel was not nearly as good quality as the main dish. The last one was the Hotate Ikura, or scallops and ikura in soy dashi, which I expected to be my favorite but turned out to be my least favorite overall, as the ikura was unfortunately a bit fishy, which was surprising given that they specialize in kaisendon and sushi, while the scallops were alright. The person who ordered that didn’t complain at all, so perhaps I just got a bad batch.

Due to my cephalopod allergy, I went with their Hitsumabushi Eel/ひつまぶし, or grilled eel over rice with sweet soy glaze, for $32. The eel was plentiful, tender, and grilled nicely with a tiny bit of char. Compared to some other spots, the kabayaki sauce wasn’t overly sweet, which I appreciated. The rice on the bottom was fluffy and absorbed the eel sauce well. Along with the other side dishes, it also came with some negi/scallion, wasabi, and nori/seaweed, which is why it’s distinguished from normal unagi dons, as the flavors can be customized more.

Another person got their Signature Kaisen-Don/海鮮丼 with tuna tartare, scallops, squid, surf clam, yuzu, tobiko, uni, ikura, cucumbers, and takuan for $37, and the last person got the reasonably priced Grilled Chicken/グリルチキン with chicken thigh, daikon radish, and ponzu sauce for $23. They both enjoyed their main dishes, with the kaisen-don in particular looking excellent. Near the end of the meal, one of us pressed the button to get the dashi, which was the final way to serve these dishes, along with my own. This was a very mild dashi on the watery end, and I probably would have preferred some green tea in there at least to make chazuke.

We decided to get dessert at the end, with both desserts in collaboration with Kitsby Dessert Bar, which used to occupy the same space, and is now active on Instagram and other sites. I tried the $10 Matcha Tiramisu/抹茶ティラミス, listed as a Kyoto-style tiramisu, decadent and indulgent with melty custard and rich matcha layers. It was a pretty standard tiramisu, aside from the matcha flavor, which replaced the bitterness of the usual coffee, and it was definitely silkier. Another person got the Hojicha Panna Cotta/ほうじ茶パンナコッタ for $8, listed as Hojicha-infused creamy milk set into a smooth and silky panna cotta, which they enjoyed.

The price points are a tad high here, but expected given the atmosphere and Williamsburg location. I would recommend, even if I prefer some other spots for kaisendon.

Definitely more of a good vibe / aesthetic kinda place. The cocktails and matcha tiramisu were so tiny but the dons were actually a good size with lots of fish. The best part was the soup at the end. ~$80pp

had this on my list of restaurants to try! finally went – recommend making a reservation as it can get busy. we went on a monday night for a 6:30 pm reservation, the decor was elegant. we ordered the fried tofu – which was amazinggggg! highly recommend! and ordered their miso cod and hitsumabushi eel dinner sets. however the wait in between the appetizer and entree was pretty long, i think we almost waited for 30 minutes after placing order for the appetizer to come. but otherwise the food was tasty, service was nice – and everything looked aesthetic. would go back to try their sushi/omakase.

the food is delicious — we had the miso cod, kaisendon and sashimi and were blown away by all of them (we even ordered the sashimi twice)!! the drinks were delightful and the service was top notch. not to mention every detail in the decor was elegant and beautiful it truly makes me miss japan. music choice was everything (definitely visit if you like j-city pop/jazz) and i cannot recommend this place more:)

This is the best kaisen-don I’ve had in NYC, and at a very reasonable price. The seafood broth they add to your leftover rice reminded me of Japan.

The decor of the place is really cool. We had great service from our server Masa. 100% coming back often.

I absolutely loved it! It really reminded me of the restaurants I visited in Nagoya. Everything tasted fresh and the Japanese drinks selection was great. The service was friendly and the atmosphere felt comfortable and relaxed.

Finally made it to Residence of Mr. Moto this weekend and I’m officially obsessed. From the second we walked in, the vibe was intimate, thoughtful, and effortlessly cool — exactly what you want in Williamsburg, but without the attitude.

The food was outstanding across the board — beautifully executed, deeply flavorful, and clearly made with intention. Every dish felt balanced and special without being fussy, and you can tell there’s real care behind what’s coming out of the kitchen. This is the kind of place where you’re already planning your next visit before dessert hits the table.

The staff deserves just as much praise — welcoming, knowledgeable, and genuinely excited to walk you through the menu. It felt like being taken care of by people who truly love what they’re doing, which makes all the difference.

As a bonus, I love that this is a true neighborhood gem — creative, elevated, and still warm and personal. Residence of Mr. Moto is one of those spots that reminds you why dining out in NYC can feel magical. Can’t wait to come back (and bring everyone I know).
