This place is an oasis in the Wilds of Down East, especially on Sunday when it seems there is no decent places to eat open beyond Ellsworth! On our way to West Quoddy we needed food and Google found the Public House. At first I thought it was a mistake because it showed the location literally out in the middle of nowhere but we found it and were very pleased. The location is beautiful, surrounded by woods, farmland and water and the building is also attractive. We were seated promptly and were surprised to see so many people there. The service and food were excellent. We had the panko haddock, steamed mussels and chowder. The mashed potatoes were chunky and the carrots very fresh. The haddock and mussels were flavorful. The prices were certainly reasonable. If they were located in Camden or Bar Harbor they could charge much more and it would still be worth it! We were sorry to leave but we had to get back on the road. I was amazed that such a restaurant was there well off the highway and not near any large cities, yet people were arriving continuously. I understand why!

Cozy yet elegant, this beautiful restaurant is tucked away in the heart of downeast Maine. Our server is a friendly and courteous man, and his skills behind the bar are as marvelous. The food had generous portions and bursted with flavor!

It was the strawberry rhubarb mule that did it for me. Five stars.
I really want to be picky about this place. I do. While I could find a few things to nitpick (a few of the clams were gravelly, some of the wait staff were cold and unfriendly), I was overall surprised and delighted with the range of their offerings. We tasted their lunch menu and their dinner menu. I would eat there every week if I had the choice. The menus were fresh, local, and each item was executed far beyond what I would expect at that price.

Beautiful place to enjoy coffee or lunch! They have a market with great treats and gifts. I was admiring the view while I ordered coffee and dessert to go. The drinks were delicious and pretty. The only issue was asking the pot de creme dessert to go. When I received the dessert, it appeared to be scooped out and missing its garnish. Still tasty!
UPDATE: My family and I stopped here for brunch. Highly recommend their harvest salad, the crispy fried haddock, and their artichoke dip. It’s definitely a place to keep on your places to visit as the quality, price, atmosphere, and service are exceptional compared to everywhere else I’ve been.

Just went for lunch for the first time. I ordered the lobster grilled cheese sandwich. It was very good and filling . Also the bread was homemade. We also got a complimentary homemade hummus and chips. It was a lot to eat so I took the rest home including the hummus. Service was very good and received our orders in a reasonable amount of time. We went early to avoid crowds. It does get very crowded on the weekend but this was during the week. They are expanding the dining hall into another building which will be for lunch and dinner (Public House) and the main section will be for breakfast.

So I regularly travel to Machias and had no idea this place even existed. It was through a random Google search that we found it and liked what we saw so decided to venture over. Incredible setting on a farm with a huge event space for weddings etc. Farm to table, including the meats which blew my mind. Portions were great, had the haddock sandwich which was absolutely perfect. If you’re looking for something different and a little upscale and Machias, this is your place. Beautiful bar, beautiful dining room. Great offerings in the mercantile but you must visit before you leave. Can’t wait to go back!

I would give 6 stars for Service if I could. Excellent. My Ceasar salad was very good and the small size with grilled salmon was plenty fir me for lunch. I asked for the salmon to be very rare but it came out medium, but it was fresh and well prepared otherwise. The desert menu looked great but we passed on desert. There were a good number of draft craft beers. The fish and chips has a good reputation and looked good to me.

Very grateful to have dined here while passing through.
The menu is very gluten free friendly. The crab dip was excellent with the perfect amount of chips. The oyster mignionette was delicious. The waitress was attentive and helpful. We had the chicken fingers and the fish and chips, both wonderful. Definitely will be back if I’m ever nearby again, even worth a special trip.
