I could envision this place as a “secret” speak easy with a big painting and door knocker to gain entrance. It needs something to make it a destination.
The owner (who was also bartender) and the server couldn’t have been nicer. The by-the-glass wine list is pretty well-rounded with a few unexpected varietals. Ambience good despite the slow night.
The food was where things fell short. They don’t make their own salad dressings (which is a problem for me – can’t eat Xanthan gum and just about 100% of bottled salad dressings has it), so the salads were out.
Husband got a Caesar and a burger, no complaints on either and no egregious errors.
I ordered a strip steak medium rare with a side of the green beans. First steak came out medium well. They were very apologetic. I kept the green beans to snack on while I waited for a remake – though I barely ate half of them. They were the hardest, most sinewy green beans I’ve ever encountered.
After what seemed like a very long wait (considering at this point we were the only diners still there), my second steak comes out – also overcooked, also medium well. Again apologetic and the owner/bartender obviously took it off my tab, along with comping my glass of wine. They offered to make me something else, but at this point we were out of time, and I was tired and hungry.
Didn’t give them a third chance to make it right – there was some commentary on a “new cook”.
Clearly, we won’t be back.
Service: The waitstaff was exceptional, and the restaurant manager was humbly appreciative of compliments. Overall, well-managed.
Atmosphere: Our group of 6 enjoyed seating at the back with views of the kitchen and the back patio.
Menu suggestion for a group of 6: Try ordering one of everything for a delightful culinary experience.
Would I do it again? Absolutely! The affordable prices make it perfect for frequent visits, and the ambiance creates a memorable outing.
A true gem in Charlotte, and it’s unfair to limit this praise only to Matthews; it deserves recognition beyond that!
P.S. I can’t forget to mention the amazing Shrimp and Grits, as well as the Brussel sprouts which were perfectly prepared – a delightful twist on a childhood hated dish! Kudos to the kitchen of Protrait Gallery!

but so far the best one was the birria tacos! You can ask for corn tortillas but they said the flour one is the best for that type of taco.
I loved the atmosphere!!! no kids
We also had great service and look forward to dining here again the next time we are in town.
