It’s unfortunate that this place is tucked into a side street because it’s pretty good. The front area is a completely different restaurant than the back and patio, which is actually a good thing. The back patio is pretty cool. There was no one there but us. The staff was at the end of the bar laughing it up which took away from the atmosphere. The Brussels were perfect. The blackened salmon was really good, actually real blackened salmon with a little kick. The tomatoes on the burrata were underwhelming. Overall a good experience.

I could envision this place as a “secret” speak easy with a big painting and door knocker to gain entrance. It needs something to make it a destination.

Absolutely love Portrait Gallery! Food is simply amazing and perfect portions. The staff is great, Lacey our server was so attentive and friendly. Brandon the owner stopped by to check on us while dining and excited to share how great the experience my wife and I were having. A must for anyone in downtown Matthews area. Insider tip, try the Brussels sprouts (you’ll be glad you did). Thank you!!!

I love PG! Sterling our server was very attentive and knew exactly what we needed (and wanted). We ordered Brussels, Truffle Fries, Mac-n-cheese, NY Strip with Bourbon Demi-Glace, Caramelized Onion Rigatoni, and Blackened Shrimp Alfredo, all delicious. The atmosphere is perfect for a birthday (like tonight) or date night, with great music and lighting. Great cocktails and wine selection too! Highly recommend sitting on the patio if you can get a table.

The patio was perfect, we went at the end of October and it was not too cold since it’s protected on all sides. It’s very cozy & everything we ordered was delicious.

Popped in tonight. I wanted to love this place. We have two hours to kill twice a week while our daughter has a commitment nearby. Walked in about 640 – a two top at the bar, a two top at a (communal) table and a solo diner at another (communal) table. We sat at the bar.

The owner (who was also bartender) and the server couldn’t have been nicer. The by-the-glass wine list is pretty well-rounded with a few unexpected varietals. Ambience good despite the slow night.

The food was where things fell short. They don’t make their own salad dressings (which is a problem for me – can’t eat Xanthan gum and just about 100% of bottled salad dressings has it), so the salads were out.

Husband got a Caesar and a burger, no complaints on either and no egregious errors.

I ordered a strip steak medium rare with a side of the green beans. First steak came out medium well. They were very apologetic. I kept the green beans to snack on while I waited for a remake – though I barely ate half of them. They were the hardest, most sinewy green beans I’ve ever encountered.

After what seemed like a very long wait (considering at this point we were the only diners still there), my second steak comes out – also overcooked, also medium well. Again apologetic and the owner/bartender obviously took it off my tab, along with comping my glass of wine. They offered to make me something else, but at this point we were out of time, and I was tired and hungry.
Didn’t give them a third chance to make it right – there was some commentary on a “new cook”.

Clearly, we won’t be back.

Food: Endless freshness, bursting with flavors, expertly prepared, and visually stunning presentation.
Service: The waitstaff was exceptional, and the restaurant manager was humbly appreciative of compliments. Overall, well-managed.
Atmosphere: Our group of 6 enjoyed seating at the back with views of the kitchen and the back patio.
Menu suggestion for a group of 6: Try ordering one of everything for a delightful culinary experience.
Would I do it again? Absolutely! The affordable prices make it perfect for frequent visits, and the ambiance creates a memorable outing.
A true gem in Charlotte, and it’s unfair to limit this praise only to Matthews; it deserves recognition beyond that!

P.S. I can’t forget to mention the amazing Shrimp and Grits, as well as the Brussel sprouts which were perfectly prepared – a delightful twist on a childhood hated dish! Kudos to the kitchen of Protrait Gallery!

We had a party of 5 and had dinner here on a Saturday night. We elected to try the “one of everything” and split it among the group. We were happy with our choice but I would say 6 or 7 people would be ideal for the amount of food you get. Our server Ryan was outstanding. Food ratings below.

So happy that they’ve changed the menu to be more similar to what it was prior to the bar food experiment. The steaks were great! Would love to see the shrimp and grits and flat breads return to the menu ! Those dishes were fire!

Finally!! A place in Matthews that makes a good Non-sugary drink !! The food was good.. I would go back and try the burgers..

but so far the best one was the birria tacos! You can ask for corn tortillas but they said the flour one is the best for that type of taco.

I loved the atmosphere!!! no kids

Another fabulous meal at The Portrait Gallery Restaurant! We have been here multiple times and each time is delicious. We enjoyed a lovely evening on the patio today and are always excited to see what will be on the ever changing menu. We always order the Brussels sprouts because no matter how they prepare them, they are tasty. In addition to the Brussels, tonight we enjoyed the flatbread – and yes, the watermelon and feta work to create a wonderful summertime combo! Additionally, we had the seared tuna and the accompanying pineapple salsa really took the flavor up to the next level.

We also had great service and look forward to dining here again the next time we are in town.
