Foodflash: After 12 Years in Chinatown, The Pig & the Lady Is …
Reviews
We ordered the Bo Kho Bolognese, Lê fried chicken wings, P&L Caesar salad, Kurobuta pork collar, pa’i‘ai bánh xèo, and the charred cabbage, and every dish was outstanding. Each plate brought something different to the table, and the creativity and balance of flavors really set this place apart.
I’ll definitely be going back the next time I can secure a reservation. I highly recommend making one in advance because this place is always packed for a reason, it’s that good. It’s located in Chinatown, so expect to park in one of the nearby paid lots, but it’s absolutely worth it. An unforgettable dining experience.
The new space is large, modern, and upbeat. It’s perfect for groups, though the noise level is moderate due to the high energy. There is parking inside the building, but street parking was plentiful and easy. Pro-tip: For groups larger than six, best to call to reserve (rather than using the app) and you will need to provide a card to hold the table.
Everything we ordered was amazing. The chicken wings were a highlight—crispy, savory, and served over a nice bed of peanuts and cabbage. I had the Pho 75, which featured a dark, deep-flavored broth with a refreshing citrus finish. The noodles were slightly thicker than the usual noodles, and the soft ground beef on top complemented the soup perfectly.
This was the only downside. Despite being a group of seven during the 6:00 PM rush, we felt pressured by the staff. Our waiter was hard to find, but the hostess approached us to remind us of our time limit and pushed us to order before our full party arrived. We overheard her complaining about our group taking too long, which felt unprofessional given that we were ready to order but couldn’t find our server. Whatever.
The prices are a bit high, but the food quality makes it worth it. I’ll be back to try more dishes, though I hope for a more relaxed service experience next time.
When we arrived early for our 5:30 p.m. reservation, the entrance was a nightmare. A lot of people seemed unaware that dinner isn’t walk-in friendly, so it turned into a cluster at the host stand. We ended up hopping in line anyway, assuming it would take at least 30 minutes to sort out.
A few important things to know: lunch and dinner have completely different menus. Also, if you order takeout during dinner service, you can access some items that aren’t available on the dine-in dinner menu, which is a helpful workaround if you’re craving specific favorites.
Overall, we enjoyed the experience, but we still prefer the food at the original The Pig and The Lady location. The Caesar salad and fried enoki apps were intensely seasoned- to the point that they overwhelmed our palate.
Then the ham-and-pancake-inspired appetizer arrived and, oddly enough, went in the opposite direction: it felt underseasoned and bland compared to the first two dishes. The balance just wasn’t there for us.
The Bo Kho pasta, which we’ve loved before, didn’t hit the same.
With a Thai tea, a seasonal shrub, and an egg espresso, our total came to $122 (not including a kitchen tax or tip).
I’d absolutely come back- but likely for lunch rather than dinner next time.
Ambience is a little cramped and loud, but definitely worth it.
I know one person recommending a place doesn’t sound like much, but in my circle, I’m considered one of the restaurant gurus. And as a profession I am face to face with tourists visiting the island.
All that said, and to make a long story longer, this new location is WAY, WAY better! I will be telling my friends to reconsider giving pig and the lady a try again.
The hand-pulled pho is a must. The pork shoulder was amazing. The crispy skin fish with potato and dill was surprisingly good. And the desserts were a great finish. If you like pickled things, give the skewered (p&l’s?) A try. Oh, and the mushroom congestion was great, too.
