I thought this was Peddler steakhouse like in Boone but I was wrong. Look at pictures. I ordered a filet 20oz butterflied well done the pictures say it all did not get anything close to it not butterflied, bloody in middle and it was not even edible. If I want real Steak I will drive to Boone and avoid hickory. I thought I was going to get the consistently good steak like I do at Peddler in Boone. The cashier was snotty hateful little brat I don’t know how the pictures are gonna show up but the steak that looks so delicious and actually looks butterflied is from Boone Peddler. If you want consistency where you know your steak will be the way you want and are expecting make the Drive to Boone. I will never return Hickory peddler it only has the name not the quality consistency and it is higher priced Than Boone Peddler. I am going to tell every person I know about how awful the steak was and for them to avoid Hickory. They only got one star because it wont let you post unless you give a star rating their attitude was I was only one person who cares if I was happy or not or got what I was paying for. Only one server with dark hair cared and was polite and kind.
Owned by Mark Scruggs, a long-time employee and manager of “The Peddler of Boone,” this restaurant represents what fine dining should be. The atmosphere is comfortable and lit by candle light … servers are prompt and friendly … if you wish, there is a full bar to lounge and enjoy your choice of drink.
It is perfect for a night to just enjoy a quiet meal … have a one-on-one business meeting or conduct an interview … open up your laptop and work on reports (or in my case, a novel) … bring the family … or bring a date to a romantic setting.
Mark, himself, wheeled a cart laden with steak and cut it to choice size (I ordered the Peddler Special, 10 oz). With the meal came a salad bar with the finest of choices … including options not commonly seen; caviar, palm tree hearts, and smoked oysters to name a few … and the best home-made French Onion Soup I’ve ever tasted, along with rolls and whipped butter. No chemicals touch the salad bar vegetables, either.
The menu offers everything The Peddler of Boone offers, with the inclusion of quail and rainbow trout. Mark owns the Mayview Rod & Gun Club in Boone, providing fresh quail for the customer.
When I got my steak, it was nothing less than fine. The steaks of The Peddler of Hickory are prepared over smoked charcoal and seasoned with “just enough” garlic salt. There was no ruining the flavor of my steak with sauces … I savored each bite just the way a high quality steak should be.
They are open from 5 pm – 10 pm Monday through Friday, and from 4 pm – 10 pm on Saturday … closed on Sunday.
The Peddler of Hickory … you MUST indulge … tell them “JP” sent you!
Tonight we had dinner there. We were offered drinks and then we’re left to wait for the “peddler” to take our order 15 minutes later the waitress came to take our menu and we pointed out no one had taken our order She seemed confused She then offered to take our order as the “the peddler” apparently was busy. We never saw her again . Our food came out delivered by someone else. I had ordered the Prime Rib medium rare .. it came medium to medium well. No one came by to ask if the steaks were prepared correctly and to be frank I didn’t want to wait for another slice. The horseradish was sweet and stale tasting. Not the least bit tangy and the meat had little flavor. A manager finally came by to ask how thing were as we were finishing the meal. finally person number 4 brought our check. Really disappointing. The actual building and interior is quite nice but the food was disappointing and the service was just bad. Too bad …there is a real place in Hickory for this type of restaurant …this isn’t it.
Talked to the owner, took me back to the kitchen and showed me the grill. Chicken had no flavor. A total disappointment. Please don’t waste your money on this place. Would love to Be able to say something good about this place there is NOTHING.
Interior is gorgeous. Raw wood lodge look with centerpiece fireplace.
Staff was moving at all times. Table was checked on by assistants and management several times.
Dinner was delicious and filling. Steak was done perfectly with right amount of seasoning and searing. Warm red center requested, warm red center received. They were out of ribeye at end of night, and management comped very well for the lack, even though it was not necessary…
EXCELLENT visit. The staff was what made it so. Food is above par, but staff makes the experience.
