The Saugus Cafe is the oldest restaurant in LA county, opening it doors in 1886. The business transferred many hands and in 1998 the business was formally purchased by longtime dishwasher/bartender/cook Alfredo Mercado. The Cafe unfortunately closed in January of 2026, due to disputes with the new landlords, who are attempting to claim ownership of the business without purchasing the business license from the Mercado family. The landlords are attempting to re-open the cafe, but as they have been refusing to lease to any potential buyers that reach out to the Mercado family, the real future of the Saugus Cafe is, for now, locked in a legal dispute.
Old-school diner featuring classic American comfort food, plus a backroom cocktail bar.

Aside from the wait time, the food items were very good taste wise. I chose the Country Fried Steak for my breakfast and we also shared a side order of Biscuits and Gravy. The steak was actually very good and very crispy but not overly done. The biscuits were OK but not favorite. I wish they would be more flaky, but I still enjoyed them. We also ordered a side of Pancakes for the table and everybody enjoyed that as well.
Overall, a good local country diner and I would recommend if you are in the area.
We were surprised they got busy around 1030 on a Tuesday, but I guess it’s just a fave. The prices are good too even despite the inflation and everything.
Our breakfast orders came in a great wait time. About 15 mins. Our server was very friendly and gave us some background on the restaurant, which we enjoyed knowing some history to this place.
The food was very tasteful.
The older man that came to our table refilling our coffee cups was very attentive.
Enjoyed the feeling of this old vintage dining atmosphere. Recommend this place, and would love visiting again.
Meals were: Denver Omelet with home fries & biscuit & gravy. AND Belgian waffle, scrambled eggs and bacon.
Very good food and a lot of it, a little on the rustic side, aka: home flavors & a little well done side. Prices are about what the market bears, maybe a little less. Bottom line, we will go back.
