The Original Montana Club, founded in 1885, is a cornerstone of Helena’s history and one of the longest-operating private social clubs in the American West. Under new ownership as of 2025, the building has undergone extensive renovations while preserving its original charm and historic character. Today, it’s home to The Rathskeller—our public bar and live music venue—and the private, members-only Original Montana Club, with more to come. A true Montana gem with history, charm, and amazing food!
Dining at The Original Montana Club was an unforgettable experience. The historic atmosphere is absolutely beautiful — high ceilings, elegant wood beams, chandeliers, and big windows overlooking downtown Helena and the surrounding mountains. You can really feel the history in every detail.
We started with the mushroom puff pastry appetizer — perfectly flaky, rich, and full of flavor. For the main course, I had the roasted chicken with creamy potatoes au gratin and glazed carrots cooked beautifully and full of comfort-food goodness. Everything was seasoned and plated with care.
Service was friendly, the beer was cold, and the view from our window table was incredible as the sun set over the city. This place captures the soul of old Montana with an upscale yet cozy dining experience.
Highly recommended for anyone visiting Helena whether for a romantic dinner, a special occasion, or simply to enjoy great food in a timeless setting.

My husband and I stopped by for a drink while out for date night. The service was outstanding and the pours were generous- which was good since it was $14/glass! Quiet and comfortable atmosphere, we would definitely go there again on a date night. We appreciated how attentive and service focused the bar staff was. A helpful improvement would be to provide a wine/drink list- we were told that there wasn’t one.

This place is awesome! We had our Valentine’s dinner here tonight and enjoyed the view overlooking the snow, the great old themed music to the great staff and service. Fantastic experience! I took it upon myself to leave my phone in my pocket so sorry no photos on this visit for respect for our epic date night.
To describe the food they provided a delicious dinner roll with house made artichoke butter. I ordered a Guinness burger that came with a side of in-house chips and my wife had the duck platter. The food was sized perfectly and it was delicious.
The desserts we’re very delicious as well. Through the meal we ordered some drinks and they were very good. I am happy we were able to reserve a table here for Valentine’s day and I definitely be back here on another evening. It is a little on the pricey side but that’s why we came here! For the high quality drinks and meals to the high quality service I feel like we discovered a new place to eat. Highly recommend!
